Re: Thoughts on name Whitney?

  • Even though I grew up with a girl named Whitney who was very down to earth, this name still seems very preppy to me.  It's pretty, but it's NMS.

  • I've actually always liked this name but I wouldn't use it because our last name starts with W and it would sound silly. Now that Whitney Houston just died, I especially wouldn't use it because I imagine everyone would assume we did it as a tribute to her. I do love me some Whitney Houston, but would never name my child after her.
  • It is such a pretty name & so under used!! It is a winner in every way, beautiful, uncommon, un-dated, I love it!!

  • NMS but still a pretty name. I'm betting the name will be pretty popular after Whitney Houston's death....if that matters to you.

    Yes.

  • I'm not a fan--reminds me of a snobby 80's mall girl.
  • I like it. It means 'white island' if I remember correctly. I got a little tired of hearing it last week because of the artist, but that will be a distant memory by the time the child is old enough to recognize her name.

  • One of my friends name was Whitney, she is no more with me now but has been a very significant part of my life?so personally I adore that name.
  • I really like Whitney. I say go for it.

    Yeah, I agree with this.

  • It reminds me of Barbie's friend Whitney. She was the only Barbie in the 80's with long dark hair. I do find it very 80's but I still think it's a pretty name.

  • I consider it dated.
  • I really like it.  Go for it!

As a Whitney myself, I'm no doubt more than biased when it comes to my positive opinion of the name.

When my parents gave me my name in June of '82, no one they encountered had ever heard it before. Then 1985 happened right alongside Whitney Houston's iconic debut album. Oh well!

Growing up, there were only two other Whitneys in my high school and just one more in college.

I've noticed (and appreciated) the new interest taken in this name, I must say.

(FWIW: Only in elementary school [at the height of Ms. Houston's career] did I get teased with references to her. I think it's safe to say that that ship has now sailed, if you were wondering about name-teasing.)
