I've actually always liked this name but I wouldn't use it because our last name starts with W and it would sound silly. Now that Whitney Houston just died, I especially wouldn't use it because I imagine everyone would assume we did it as a tribute to her. I do love me some Whitney Houston, but would never name my child after her.
I like it. It means 'white island' if I remember correctly. I got a little tired of hearing it last week because of the artist, but that will be a distant memory by the time the child is old enough to recognize her name.
It reminds me of Barbie's friend Whitney. She was the only Barbie in the 80's with long dark hair. I do find it very 80's but I still think it's a pretty name.
As a Whitney myself, I'm no doubt more than biased when it comes to my positive opinion of the name.
When my parents gave me my name in June of '82, no one they encountered had ever heard it before. Then 1985 happened right alongside Whitney Houston's iconic debut album. Oh well!
Growing up, there were only two other Whitneys in my high school and just one more in college.
I've noticed (and appreciated) the new interest taken in this name, I must say.
(FWIW: Only in elementary school [at the height of Ms. Houston's career] did I get teased with references to her. I think it's safe to say that that ship has now sailed, if you were wondering about name-teasing.)

Yeah, I agree with this.
