Baby Names

Teen moms...

A lot of comments are made about how a name can sound 'teen mommish' (I'm sure stemming from the show). So was curious if you know any teen moms IRL & what they named their babies!

For me...
Jameson
Anthony
Bailey (boy)
Trevor
Spencer

Just realized all have been baby boys. Weird!

    My son is John.

The other teenage mothers I know named their children, Patrick, James, Isaiah and Victoria.

Oddly enough I have heard as many or more trendy, unique and horrible choices on the bump than from the teens I have known.

I don't think poor name choices are due to a person's age.

EDIT I can not believe the attitudes of some of the people here. I posted names here to show that some teens are capable of choosing real names.

There's actually studies done on socio-economic status and teen pregnancies. Emperical evidence is behind the PP, so I think your above comment was uncalled for.

My son isn't named Brodie or Neveah. I have seen more questionable names on the Bump than anywhere else. (and I have volunteered at a home for teen moms)

The wording and tone of the post were rude and insulting to teen mothers and that is uncalled for.

EDIT It is also wrong to make fun of people of a lower socioeconomic status because you feel they choose bad names.

I was a little shocked by 'college couple''s post. I said Teen Mom names because people always make a point of calling a name they find trashy a 'teen mom' name. Which I don't think is fair. I think my list of names of teen mothers babies that I know are not 'trashy' at all. I think for me to post something about teen moms and her to put low-socio economic status women automatically in the same category was not right. None of the girl's I have known have been remotely trashy or on the low economic side.

If I can come up with those names in 3 minutes in Cleveland, I am sure there are more out there. I cannot stand the comments that a certain name means you are destined to grow up to be a stripper, or that it is not possible to be a doctor or lawyer because your name is Crystal. Its absurd and ridiculous.

I am also well aware that studies have proven a direct relation between teen moms, low socio-economic status and the respective baby names. What i was commenting on was your remark about babies with certain names being incapable of getting anywhere in life.

Agreed. Teen mom does not equal incapable of naming a child, and neither does low socio-economic status. Professional adults are just as capable of picking a horrid name, or making a normal name you-neek. But they dont get picked on.

I agree with you about some of the responses. My post was actually meant for people to see that the actual teen mom's I know have not named their children badly... (at least IMO). I find some people on this board to say things without thinking them through. Yes, it's a public online board to get different opinions.. there is still a way to be tactful.

"You think there are going to be a lot of lawyers and doctors named Nevaeh, Brodie, Crystal etc.? .... No"

It is kind of a rude way of saying 'less likely' you must admit!

  • Emma

    Isabella

This partially counts, because some of her kids were born when she was a teen, but she's 26 now. Shakiya, Nakiya, Skylee, Issac (not a typo), and Maliky (I thought it might be a cutesy nickname for Malik. Nope. It's Malachi).

My aunt had a Jennifer, but that was back in the 70's, My aunt was 14 or 15.

I know there are more I'm not thinking of so I might come back later if they come to mind. Meaning, I'm off to go lurk facebook to jog my memory.

Had I given birth in my teens, my child would have a terrible name that I made up. How do I know this? I made a list of names that I JUST KNEW I would name my future children. I specifically sat there and figured out very complicated ways to spell all of the names as differently as possible. It was bad. Just bad. I mean, there was a Beighley. And a Devahlynn. And I'm not even going to continue, lest I make myself barf!

I see a difference. I just agree with the fact that any child with any name can be anything and maybe not in this particular thread but in many posts I see, people label what the child's career will be based on the name. I don't understand that.

Of course, any child can have the aspiration to be what ever they want to be.

However, whether you like it or not (or understand it), people still get judged by their name at times.

Sometimes it is not intentional, but it happens.

It does not mean it is fair, but it happens.

Not everyone can put aside judgment in the real world. When someone sees a name on a piece of paper, that is sometimes all they have. And yes, we judge. We judge about everything under the sun, whether we like it or not. It is how we apply the judgment when interacting with that person.

...or their parents get judged. It happens.

What a great way to justify prejudice and discrimination. Yay!

I agree that the two don't go hand in hand. I have known teen moms from very well off families. I am 26, married for a while, we're having our first child... and we are of a very low economic status right now because even though I have a master's degree and social work licensure, I still have no job 10 months post graduation. At prenatal appointments it is assumed that I am completely uneducated and unaware of what is going on with me, and nobody knows how to react when I come prepared with detailed medical questions. I like to believe that my children will have very normal names: Paula Jean or Julian James. I've seen very well off parents give their children horrible names, and your stereotypical "trashy" people give their children very normal and nice names.

When I think of "teen mom name," I don't think "poor person name." I just remember some of the crap thought of as a teen, which were terrible despite my typically privileged upbringing, and the kinds of names that teens in general tend to think are cool because they're "different" or "creative."

  • Most kids born to teen moms I know were born late 90's/early 00's, with the exception of Nichole (that's me) and Braiden (my step-nephew born in 1994):

McKenna Jade, Jade, Travis Colton, Ellie-Cate, Hunter Orion, Corbin, Austin, identical twins Alyssa Marie & Meghan Rose, Malachi, Jamie-Claire Leanne. None of them are horrible.

It's funny that the worst names I've ever encountered IRL were adorable twin girls in my neice's church preschool: Kynaddi and Trynadi. Yikes. I saw their late 30's-ish mom loading them into her BMW.

I think this proves that no matter when in life you have your children or how much money you have when they are born... some people just have bad taste. And those people aren't always who you think they are.

People of all socioeconomic status can become teen moms/parents. However, pretending that socioeconomic status has NOTHING to do with getting pregnant at a younger age is simply incorrect. Of course children/teens that are poor are more likely to get pregnant. As a teacher and person with an actual education, that is just blatantly obvious and factual. Don't believe me? Google it.

I just know one. She named her daughter Gianna.

She did a very good job ;)

My best friend had her son when she was 18, his name is Robert.  A friend in high school had a little girl freshman or sophmore year, her name is Victoria.
