Hurt shoulder/Baby wearing

I bought a small K'tan double ring sling and I like it but I have a really badly messed up rotator cuff and it seems to hurt it.  Then I washed it and shrunk it and it doesn't fit- I'm not really sure it fit correctly before, it seemed to sit really high and it was pretty hard to move in. So I'm looking to buy another type of carrier and I'm not sure what to try.  I had the Moby (never wore it) and I didn't really like how huge it was (we're in south TX so it's just too much to wear in 110+ degree weather for months at a time).  I really liked the ease of my K'tan but I'm also scared that it might not have been ill fitting and those really are hard on shoulders.

What should I do?  What would you ladies recommend? I did research when I was preggo and just loved the K'tan and I don't have the money to invest in a bunch of carriers but it's super necessary for me to have at least one good one.

TIA!

Re: Hurt shoulder/Baby wearing

  • Now that your baby is older a ring sling is going to be uncomfortable for any extended wearing.  After about 6-7 months DS would only tolerate a hip carry and he got heavy fast.  I used it more for quick errands.

I personally like the Beco (I've never used an Ergo) or some SSC.  They help evenly distribute the weight over your entire torso.  They also have a more open design allowing for more airflow (I've heard good things about the Ergo Sport in hot climates).

  • Can a Beco be worn with the baby facing out?  That's DS's favorite thing..plus he has reflux and I'd prefer he didn't vomit down my chest.

the only outward facing SSC is the Beco Gemini.

  • I have spine injuries.  I can only tolerate my RS for about 30-45 minutes.  My ERGO can last me a very long time, up to say 4-5 hours (that would include in- and outs- with meals for LO etc).  My favorite is my Didymos 6.  I hiked all over the Cascade Mountains last summer with LO, and we were great.  I adore it.  And even hiking in the summer in the 90's, we didn't get too hot.  That said, the 90's are not the same as 110.  I guess I'd go with an SSC.  And, don't give up on a facing-in carry; things change sometimes.
