Babies: 9 - 12 Months

dropping nap #2

Hello ladies, visiting from 6-9. I was just wondering when any of you LO's if they have yet, dropped nap #2?? My LO has been fighting both of her naps this week, and she has always been a pretty consistent napper with little to no crying. I just want to know if I should just focus on getting her to take one nap. Thanks!

Re: dropping nap #2

  • Mine seems to be dropping it right now. He has napped two times a day consistently for a long time, but in the last 1-2 weeks he's been skipping his second nap once in a while and just going to bed a half hour earlier (6:30 instead of 7)

  • Mine is doing this exactly.  He sleeps pretty well for his first nap, but he's completely not interested in his afternoon sleep.  He gets a bit grumpy right before dinner, but he's passed out by 6:30pm....

    Nope, not anywhere near it.

  • Nope, Chloe is still a solid 2 naps a day...although I can't wait for the days when only one nap rules our lives...

  • I think DS is trying to drop one of his naps, but I'm clinging to both naps for dear life. I told him you may not need it, but mommy certainly needs that time.

  • DD fought naps for a few weeks around 8-9 months old and spent about a week taking just 1 nap/day (in the afternoon), but she just wasn't ready for it. She constantly looked tired, and her night sleep got even worse during that week, so I went back to really working hard to get her to take both naps. It took a week or two of continuing to fight, but now we're back to 2 solid ones/day and I'm hoping that lasts a while!

  • Wow.. we just dropped the 3rd nap this week. There is NO way we will be going down to 1 nap anytime soon.. plus I don't think I could handle it :)

Did your LOs' drop their 3rd nap before 9 months?

  • Wow! No, I'd say your little one could be having a nap strike due to teething or some sort of developmental spurt or even separation anxiety.

Is your LO trying to learn to crawl?? That was a big nap disturber here for both of my boys, but it went back to normal after a few days.

My DS #2 dropped to 2 naps at 7 months and now he is 1 year old still napping 2 times per day. I'm sure he will be taking 2 naps for a few more months as he just started walking. As he's walking more and more, he's getting more tired and really needs that second nap. My older DS walked at 10 months and didn't drop to 1 nap until 14.5 months.

Average age to go to one nap is 15-18 months. Daycares often drop babies to 1 nap around 12 months, but that's the earliest I would consider.

  • All babies are different. You just have to listen to your LO's cues. On days DS doesn't take a second nap I try for over an hour to get him to take a nap, and if it doesn't work I give up. He doesn't get fussy and just sleeps an hour earlier. Not all/many babies will be "by the book."
  • DS dropped his second nap a couple of weeks ago.  Unlike most babies, he dropped his afternoon nap, only napping in the morning.  I'll take it, though, since now he STTN or only wakes up once or twice, where before he'd wake up a million times a night, lol.

  • My daughter usually doesn't take her 2nd nap, unless her first one is short.  She hasn't been taking the 2nd nap for about a month now.  She is up from 3-8pm, so around 5 hours.

  • Our son is six months and started having weird naps.  Short, and refusing the last cat nap.  I did a bunch of online searching and found babywhispererforums.com

Awesome site!  Basically he was undertired for naps and it was time to increase his awake time.  I had been so scared of getting him over tired that I kept his awake time low and at the first yawn, I'd put him down.  Well, as they get older, you sometimes have to push their awake times to get better naps.  Worked for us right away.  He'll still act tired sometimes at his old wake times, but we push him a bit and his naps are longer and better.
