I know we are not supposed to eat feta, but is this an outdated idea? I know most feta cheese bought in the United States has gone through some testing so I'm really curious to see how 'dangerous' it really is.
Has anyone done any research on this? I don't have to have it but I do LOVE it, so I'm just curious.
Thanks.
Re: Feta cheese?
Oh, dear.
Yes, you can eat feta and any other "soft" cheese as long as it is pasteurized. You will be hard pressed to find any cheese in the US that is not.
I have seen that there is pasteurized bleu cheese so I would guess the same goes for feta? You'd just have to look for it though.
I told my husband this and his response was "well do you think the Greek stop eating it for 9 months?". Touche...but I'm not going to risk it without pasteurization.
This. Any cheese you buy in the grocery store will be pasteurized and is fine (feta, soft, or otherwise!).
This might be true for your traditional grocery store but it certainly NOT the case with artisan cheeses! My husband (a chef) and I regularly eat/ate unpasteurized cheeses bought at our local market and many restaurants serving specialty products serve unpasteurized cheeses as well. Just check it before you buy it!
It's not a concern. The chances of you eating unpasteurized cheese is highly unlikely. Eat all the Feta you want.
All the raw milk cheese that whole foods sells is aged for at least 60 days, by law, which basically takes out the majority of the risk. It's the stuff aged for less than 60 days that you really have to worry about.
I am going to bet that 99% of the cheese people are worried about eating, isn't the raw milk stuff that Whole Foods sells.
Thank you. For Christ's sake. No one said it was illegal. We said it is "hard to find." Meaning, you need to go to specailty stores to find it. What she is likely talking about/craving...say a Greek Salad from Panera, etc. is FINE. Goodness.
I think PP was thinking when I said 'smuggled' that I meant illegal.
Gotcha. You mean that's not what you meant?
Ha. Exactly what I meant, clearly
I am glad I am not the only one that gives the side-eye at the cheese posts. I get that people don't want to put bad shiit in their bodies, but I wish people realized that the chances of them actually eating unpasteurized cheese is next to zero. If you normally eat unpasteurized cheese it's probably because you're some sort of foodie and actually seeking out these cheeses for that reason or you're at a super high end restaurant. No plain jane would ever 'accidentally' pick up any random cheese and it be unpasteurized. The chances of that happening are slim to none.
Totally, completely fine. Essentially all cheese served at major restaurants and chains and in grocery stores in the US is pasteurized.
Obviously, it's different if you're buying artisanal cheese or ordering in a specialty restaurant. However, the chefs will always know--we went to an anniversary dinner last week and ordered a cheese course, and we just checked with the chef to know which ones I could eat and which DH got all to himself.
Thanks everyone! I thought so but just wanted reassurance
.
I work at a hotel so I'm just going to double check with our chef!
