We went to Babies R Us this weekend and opened a registry! We were using the list they gave us as a guide but there was a few things I questioned.
Are any of you investing in "water proof matress pads" or "sheet savers" for your baby? I like the idea of hopefully saving the sheets/matress from stains..etc. However, I thought we weren't supposed to put anything at all in the crib other than baby and fitted sheet?
What are your plans for these? I'm leaning towards skipping them for now and see how it goes....
Re: Matress Pads and Sheet Savers?
We have a mattress topper for our boys and it is GREAT! I don't have a girl and most of my friends that have boys as well, have the same issues we do. The boys pee through their diapers more often than I can count. The waterproof mattress toppers are awesome and inexpensive so I would definitely invest in one.
We are and we'll layer up. Waterproof Mattress Pad/ sheet saver/sheet/sheet saver/sheet
That way if there's a mess in the middle of the night we can just pull off the first layer and deal with remaking the bed in the morning.
Great idea!
This is exactly what we will be doing...
the mattress pad and sheet obviously goes over the mattress, its not like it is just sitting in the crib with the baby... they are all fitted, therefore will be taught to where the baby wont have an issue with it.
Our crib mattress is water-resistant but we also got a mattress protector.
From what I can tell, these are not to protect the mattress but are to make clean-up easier. All baby mattresses I've used are slick and easy to wipe off. They aren't soft cotton like normal mattresses, so you can't really stain them.
With our first, we just used an absorbent cotton mattress pad on top of the mattress. Most big messes soak through multiple layers anyway, unless you use the mattress pads that are lined with plastic (which I didn't like using).
We have a waterproof mattress pad under the fitted sheet and that's it. My son has only leaked out of his diaper once and he's almost 2. We've never had to change the sheet in the middle of the night since the only leaky diaper was discovered in the morning.
I would definitely suggest a waterproof mattress pad under the sheet so you don't get urine (or anything else) all over your mattress. You don't want to be scrubbing the mattress during the night when you can just take off the dirty bedding and put on new bedding.

I HIGHLY recommend The Ultimate Crib Sheet! It has a regular cotton top layer and a very liquid resistant under layer and elastics that snap around the crib rails so if you have a mess you simply unsnap it and remove it... NO need to wrangle the mattress! It saves soooo much time and energy and is especially nice in the middle of the night.
eh, I disagree. We never used one with DS and did have several wet through diapers. Crib mattresses are easy to clean.
We received a bunch of waterproof pads and use them for other purposes - changing table, laying baby on the floor after a bath, naked time, etc etc. And we used them in the crib for the first time last weekend when DS had a nasty stomach flu.
I am trying to avoid having my baby sleep on plastic, so I am buying a non waterproof mattress and to contain wetting, I am using wool puddle pads under a cotton non waterproof mattress pad. So with certain kinds of mattresses, these extra layers are essential. I would probably use a pad even with a waterproof mattress because a thin sheet over a plasticky surface feels icky to me.
