Baby Names

Critical thinking required! :-)

Ok, trying to name come up with names.  Girl for now.  Here are the catches--DH hates nicknames.  And yes I know you can shorten almost anything, but he's talking really obvious ones (Katherine to Kate, Angela to Angie {which is funny since that's my name LOL}, Sandra to Sandy...you get the idea).  Also, since our last name ends with an "e" sound, when you have a first name that also does, it sounds too "valley girl" for me...ex "Brittany Bailey".  LIKE TOTALLY! ;-)

So, I'd like some help from you champion namers.  You can see the names we've already chosen in my siggy, to give you some idea of what we like.  Also, I'm liking Aurora, Fiona (though it seems to be getting really, really popular and I'm not sure how I feel about that), Helena, Calista, Jacinda.  And throw out some middle names too...naming babies is hard! :-)

Re: Critical thinking required! :-)

  • Ah... bad combination! You seem to like longer names, and he hates NNs--that leaves you with few options!

My good friend has a Monica, which I think would be perfect for you. Danica is similar and very pretty.

I'm becoming more of a fan of NNs as full names... Betty, Libby, Lottie. Is that something y'all would go for?

And I personally love short names--Pearl, June, Jane, Grace, Kate...

I know, right?  I don't mind 2 syllable names, even though my list was full of long ones.  It's just hard to find something that doesn't end in "e" that's fairly short. *sigh*  I love short names too.  But I'm afraid that especially when she's young, people would start saying "Janie" or "Gracie", KWIM?

  • I'm starting to regret using "Corinne" for my daughter's MN.  I love that name, fits the parameters, etc.

  • I love your naming style... Sabrina and Celeste are beautiful.  What a about Simone?
  • Just because there is a NN for a name you like, doesn't mean you have to use it, and I don't think it's inevitable that people will use it.  My DH's name is Daniel and his sister is Elizabeth.  My ILs only call them Daniel and Elizabeth.  Rarely (and usually only after a glass of scotch) my MIL will say Dan or Lizzie.  DH's family follows suit with this and they refer to them by their full names, too.

Just putting that out there - not every Katherine will be called Kate/Katie, especially if her parents only call her Katherine.

  • Oh, I agree that it's not a given.  Unfortunately, my husband doesn't agree.  LOL.  We loved the name "Calista", and as soon as we told his brother, he goes "Oh, CALLIE!!!" And that was it...it killed it for my husband.

agreed.  my cousins names are matthew and christopher.  and that is ONLY what they are called.  no matt and chris.    I think parents really can dictate what their children are called.  We have an Isabella and Jacob.  I made it very clear that they were Bella and Jake.  I was more concerned that my daughter would be called Izzy, which i hate (sounds like a yappy chihuahua name).  Everyone calls them Bella and Jake.

  • I agree with the PP that, at least in early childhood, you can avoid nicknames.

My good friend has a son Christopher and he is just Christopher.  Nobody ever calls him Chris.  My roommate in college was Katherine and never went by Kate or Katie.

Some girl ideas...  Emma, Anna, Amelia, Claire, June, Audrey, Lauren, Sarah, Stella, Veronica, Mallory, Kathleen, Caitlin, Rachel, Kristen, Scarlett, Violet...

I could go on and on.  I think that there are tons of great names with no obvious or immediate go-to short nickname.

I think if you start getting into the nitty gritty and worrying about things like "Juney" you are being a little neurotic.  My son is Connor (no obvious nickname) and sometimes people will call him stupid things like con-man or con-ster because they are just kidding around or using it as a term of endearment.  In no way am I worried about him being called "con man" at school.  Just like I wouldn't worry about my DD (Katherine) being called "Katie-bug" (or at-home nickname for her) at school.

  • I think you have a lot of really nice names on your list, but I agree with Hannah, it's hard to think of something longer that doesn't have a nickname. That said, I have a lot of names on my list that I think don't have obvious nicknames, so maybe one of them will work for you:

    Cora (DD)

    Iris

    Audra

    Adria

    Maeve

    Eloise

    Hazel

    Ivy

    Isla

    Ada

    Lydia

    Clara

    Vera

    Eleanor

    Sylvie

    Violet

    Maren

    Adair

  • Well, perhaps I am neurotic; I'm OK with that.  But I have time to think about it, so I'm asking for suggestions.  And again, my DH is half of this equation and while I completely understand that a "Christopher" doesn't have to become a "Chris", my DH doesn't like it.

And there's a big difference in "Con-man" which isn't a real name, and "Janie", which is.  Apples and oranges.

This. We named our son Anthony and we detest the NN Tony. If you always tell people "no they go by their given name" a NN most likely will not stick. I have friends that go by their given full names; Amanda, Jeffrey, & Nicholas. We are naming our DD Victoria and she will be known as Victoria. So don't rule out a name just because it has a poular NN.

*sigh* Please see my 4 posts about how it's not me.  My HUSBAND is inflexible on this.

I'm looking for names that fit these parameters, not advice on how to get around it.

Ooooh, I really like Cosette a lot.  Thank you!

And congratulations on your BFP...I was due on November 10 last year, though she showed up two weeks early on October 27.  It's a great time to have a baby.  You get a lot of slack cut for you when it comes to holiday preparations, people are constantly cooking this time of year so they bring you tons (meaning, you don't have to worry about it!), and the weather at the end of your pregancy cools off for that last month and a half or so!

Oops, didn't even see other posts until now. Since Sabrina & Corrine were both originally on my personal list of favorites ( DH didn't like), maybe you might like one of the other names from my original list. Colette, Tessa, Simone, Violet, & Lana. Although we vetoed Lana due to what is spells backwards.

Edie: Haha, now that I read the entire thread most of these names are already mentioned. Sorry, I don't think I helped.

  • Georgia
    Serena
    Helene

    Love the previously suggested Cosette.
