Making or buying Puree

Baby recently started eating puree. I was buying her the stage one gerber, Yesterday it was her first day having fruits,I gave her the banana one..She didn't like it at all so I decided to make my own at home and she ate it much better. What have you decided to do? are you buying them? if so, what brand? Or are you making them?

  • We'll do a mix of both. It's so easy to make them but it's nice to have them in jars because they're portable.

  • I plan to make them like I did with L. I will buy a handful to have for when we are away from home. I actually love making baby food.

  • We are buying purees, but I found out on my BMB the other day this might be an unpopular move. We are buying organic whenever possible. So far -- Gerber Organic, Earth's Best, and we will start buying some of the pouches later (Plum and Ella's Kitchen).

  • I made all of DD1's and will make all of DD2's. I have no issue with jarred food, I just think it's fun to make my own and DD1 loved more texture in her food so she didn't like the few jars we did try anyway.

  • I'm definitely going to be making our baby food. It's waaay cheaper and much healthier since I know exactly what goes in it.

  • I'm hoping to make most, but I haven't had time to start so I've started her on gerber pears. She's still kind of meh on baby food in general. I will say, having made my own pears for G - I do prefer the texture of homemade.

  • I made all of DD's baby food, so I will do the same for DS.  It's not very hard and I have a nice sense of accomplishment after I finish a batch.  I have these Baby Food Cubes, so we use those with our homemade food when we're out.

  • I've made my own for all three of my kids.  It's quite easy and doesn't require a lot of time.  All you need is a blender or food processor and it's well worth the effort knowing what is actually going into their little tummies.  I generally spend about a half hour every Sunday making batches of food for my LO.  I now have enough for the next month or so, so I think I'll take a break.

  • Definitely making my own! I received a baby food cook book as a gift and I am excited to start making some purees. Won't be for at least a month, if not longer though.

I might eventually buy some pre-made stuff, but I really like knowing what is going in to my kiddo, especially since BFing didn't work out for us. It's silly, but it makes me feel better :)

  • Making our own also. We ended up with two baby bullets as gifts! And we kept both. I figure having extra in case we need bigger batches, erc. Also I use it for making my own "green smoothies" and I love it!

  • I'm making my own, like I did with DD. Its so easy, less expensive, and fun. I just made sweet potatoes yesterday and I can't wait to see what DS thinks!

  • I'm not against jarred/packaged baby food, but so far I've made LO's purees, and I'm planning to keep doing that.  I like making it, it doesn't take very long, and it's a lot cheaper than buying it.  She's only had avocado (mush it up with a fork) and sweet potato (I used a hand-mixer) so far.  On Saturday I made two ice cube trays of each, so I have a bunch in the freezer now.  I bought a bag of frozen peas for her over the weekend, and I'm going to do those next.

As far as how long it takes - last Wednesday night, I threw 2 sweet potatoes in the oven for an hour while I was getting LO ready for bed.  I took them out right before DH and I ate dinner.  As I was cleaning up our dinner, I also popped the potatoes out of the skins and mashed them up (like, 5 minutes).  DD had about a tablespoon of them mixed with formula on Thursday and she loved them, so on Saturday I spent about 15 minutes to hand-mix the rest with some formula and plop the puree into ice cube trays.  Sunday morning, I dumped the ice trays into freezer bags and viola!  24 servings of sweet potatoes, ready to go.  To feed her last night, I microwaved one cube for a few seconds and thinned it with a little more formula.
