Croup ?

I took DD to pedi on Friday morning due to her cough. It was croup so they gave her a steriod in office. The doctor said Friday night may still be rough but she should start feeling better and have less of the barky cough on Sat. Well here it is Sunday morning and she's got a horrible cold runny nose, is extremely fussy but does not have the barky sounding cough its more of a broken rattling type cough. She's seems to be more uncomfortable today then she was Friday morning. Will it get better or do you think I should go back to pedi today?

Re: Croup ?

  • Is the rattling in her throat?  If so then that is good.  It means the swelling has gone down,  she is draining and will be able to cough that gunk up.

  • Croup is swelling in the throat caused by a cold or virus.  The steroid only treats the swelling, but now the virus itself will have to run it course, which may mean fever, stuffy nose, etc.  Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • We just had this a month ago and DS went another 3 weeks of being sick and is FINALLY doing better. It's a nasty virus that just has to run it's course. If she spikes a fever or anything like that then I'd take her back. DS did have a mild case of RSV last week with fever but has since recovered just fine.

Absolutely this.  Typically speaking, our daughters get croup with any cold virus.  The croup resolves in about 48-72 hours but the cold remains.  That will just take time to heal! Good luck!

  • We have had some awful croup (landing in the hospital), and what you are describing sounds like the normal progression in our house.  Can you call and ask rather than bringing her in?

  • I have no advice, but am grateful you posted this. LO has a cough and I had wondered if it could turn to croup. Lots of great info.

  • I just want to let you know. My son got croup last week on Wednesday.  I ended up taking him into Children's Hospital 3 times, and each time he had a new diagnosis.  The third time he went in, he had bronchialitis which is indicative of a rattling cough.  I took him into his pediatrician on the Tuesday following his croup diagnosis, and it had progressed into pneumonia.  I don't mean to scare you, but just watch his breathing and watch whether it moves from his upper respiratory tract into his lungs. I'm very glad that I was overly obsessed with him being sick because than I may not have caught when it turned into pneumonia.

  • I consider myself an expert on croup since my older son seems to get it about every 2 months (he's had it at least 5 times in the past year- I've lost count).  The way my pedi explains it, croup is really just a cold virus that happens to make a baby's throat close up.  It causes adults' airways to close up a little too, but since ours are so much bigger, it doesn't give us the barky cough.  So it sounds like your DD's swelling in the throat has gone down and now she is just left with the cold virus.  I would give it a day or two.  If she seems totally miserable, maybe take her back to the doctor.
