Breastfeeding

Combining pumped milk

I pumped just a little last night (like less than half an oz) then this morning pumped about 2 oz, and combined the 2 pumping sessions. The milk has been in the fridge since then, and I want to pump some more after she eats again. How many times can I pump and combine? We are planning on giving her a bottle sometime this evening (before the 24 hour mark for last night's pump session). Right now I don't have enough for a full bottle for her, so I was wondering if I can continue to add what I pump until I have 4-5 oz.

Also, how much should I give her in a bottle? She will be a month old on Tuesday.

Re: Combining pumped milk

  • As far as I know you can keep breastmilk in the fridge for 24 hrs before you store in freezer, so it should be fine to give if before 24 hrs. As far as how much she will eat, it usually goes by 2 1/2 ounces per pound for the whole day. So if your baby is about 10 lbs then she will eat about 25 ounces for the whole day. My baby is a little over 1 month and we gave her a bottle of breastmilk for the first time today. She is about 9.5 lbs and took 2.5 ounces well and seemed satisfied. I'm pretty new to this too, but hope this helps a little!

Thanks! DD is probably right around 9.5 lbs so that helps a lot!

  • As I undestand it, you are it supposed to combine warm milk with refrigerated milk. So you probably shoudn't pump it and put it directly into the container with he other milk, but you can refrigerate it separately, and then put it all in the same bottle together later.

This. Add cold to cold. Can stay in the fridge up to 8 days, 3 is ideal.
