Going out in the am without ruining nap?

Is this even possible?  ::sigh::  We have been on one nap a day for over 2 months now.  We took a lovely trip to Costco this morning as a family, something I'm afraid to do on my own as I can not give up on my precious nap time when I'm alone... and it is backfiring on us.  As I type this one of my boys is periodically yelling out from his crib.  He fell asleep twice in the car this morning.  He's been in his crib for over a half an hour playing but now he's getting fussy....please sleep, please!

Does everyone just do what I do and only attempt outings during the afternoon until they are older?  ...or only go out really, really close to home?

  • Generally when I'm alone I only do outings in the afternoon. I occasionally do the grocery or Target in the morning. To keep them awake in the car, which is really only an issue for one of them, I have Baby Einstein on the iPad and they get lots of snacks and books. We took an outing to Sam's this morning. They just went down and I'm hoping they'll stay that way. I find mine don't nap as well when we have a morning out.

  • My kids nap at noon, and if we're in the car after 10:30 am, it's almost a given that one of them will fall asleep and ruin the whole days' schedule.

I do my errands nearby and usually first thing (ie. 8AM Target run, maybe one other stop, and home).

I'll often watch them in the rearview mirror and sing, call their names, act like a total spaz just to keep them awake. Otherwise is makes for a long afternoon!

  • Mine wake at 6:30 and go down at 1 pm.  I run my errands in the morning and am home by 11:45 or noon for lunch and nap.  We always stay close to home and I've never done more than Target, the grocery or something similar on my own.

  • Yeah, the whole day went to heck.  Put him down at 12:15. Went to get him around 1:00, his brothers slept until 2:45.  He fell asleep in my arms at 3ish and I let him sleep for a half an hour or so.  He is a mess now. Poor boy.  Poor mom.  Won't try this again anytime soon.

  • Mine are still on two naps. But, I still worry about this because even 5 minutes can ruin the afternoon nap. If we go out in the morning, it's brief. I try to give them a toy that they don't play with regularly when we are on the way home.

When one has fallen asleep before a nap in the past, I've tried to keep that baby up for an extra 20 to 30 minutes...it usually worked.

  • i think as they get a little older, they will be able to stay awake a little better. but i know that even now, asher will fall asleep in the car if it's a longer trip because he's not getting enough sleep at night.

the other thing i could recommend is making sure you are home with plenty of time to play, eat, and maybe play some more before naps, so that even if one of them cat naps in the car he has time to get tired again.

also- i had been thinking of going to costco this morning, i wonder if we would have run into each other!

  • Luckily Costco is really close to home for us.  Yeah, when mine were that little we stayed close to home in the morning.  Mine transitioned to 1 nap at 16mos.  Audrey could fall asleep so easily in the car and it would totally ruin nap.

Oh wow, I never realized you were that close by.  Which Costco do you go to?  We either go to KOP or Christiana, DE.  Yesterday we went to DE.
