PIO injection question

Anyone else having issues with these injections? I had absolutely no problem giving myself all of my stim injections, but when it comes to this IM one, I'm at a loss Sad  The needle went back and forth between DH and I for an hour until I broke down in tears and drove to my RE office (30 miles away) and had one of the nurses do it and it was a piece of cake! I don't know why I can't bring myself to just do it!!  They gave me some suppository samples and now I'm out of those and am dreading the inevitable.  I think DH is more nervous about hurting me than I was trying to do it myself.. Any suggestions on how to ease the anxiety a bit?

Thank you in advance for ANY suggestions for this big cry baby CryingEmbarrassed

I just tried to be alone so I could concentrate and focus on it.

  • My nurse said it was okay to ice, so I do and find that helps a ton. I will ice for up to 20 minutes. After that, most of the time I can't feel a thing. I have DH do it when I am home, but I had to do it myself while traveling. For me, just knowing that I was not going to feel a thing made a huge difference.

Following the advice of someone on here, I put one foot up on a chair and give the shot in my hip. (The nurse also said I could do it in the front of my thigh, but that freaked me out.)

    GL. You can do it!

  • I had the same issue. Finally I just said to myself you have done everything else and could do this, it took 2 tries but I got the job done. Also DH was away and my dad had to give me the pio and he was being a sissy so I just said get mad at me and jab it in. walla it was over:)

  • LOL.. you ladies are wonderful!! Thank you so much for the advice, I think I'll try the icing tonight and have a go at it.  I think part of the problem was DH kept saying things like, "ok you ready" "here it comes" I'm just going to do it" And that freaked me out and made me tense up.

    Thanks again

  • My DH does my PIO shots.  He uses a marker to identify the target, either I lay down or I lean against the kitchen counter, and then he aims as if he was playing darts.  Normally, I only feel a little pinch.

Afterwards, he massages the area and I stretch to make sure the PIO doesn't lump up.  So far, things have worked out pretty good.

We did have one night where he kept hitting  veins instead of muscle (oy vey!) but he's been great every other time.  I applaud your courage ~ I don't know if I could give myself the PIOs.   GL.

  • Thx Gloriasgirl.. Actually Got er dun tonight, YAY!  and it wasn't so bad.. will be a cake walk here on out.  Thanks all again for the advice.

Same here.  He my DH acts like he's playing darts.  Identifies his target and inserts it really fast.  I don't feel a thing!

  • i hate them...i know, they suck. i have to have mh do it. it takes me about 20 minutes each time to get mentally prepared...but the shot itself isnt as bad as i make it out to be. the worst part for me has been the day after, with the soreness.

heating pads have become my bff lol.

  • I think it helps to switch sides every four or five days. By the time one side gets really sore, you're switching. Then back again. Keeps the chances of infection and lumping up way down. It takes about four days for one side to get bad, and then about four days for it to get better. So the switch works well. It also helps to have NO weight bearing down on the injection-side leg...let it hang.
