FET vs. Fresh IVF cycles - your thoughts?

I was just wondering what your experiences have been between the two or what you have heard from your RE. I have heard conflicting stories on FET being more or less effective than a fresh IVF cycle. We are about to go through a FET (scheduled for April) and I'm nervous. Our first IVF cycle was successful but we lost our twins at 18 weeks.

Thank you for any input on FET vs. Fresh IVF cycles.

Re: FET vs. Fresh IVF cycles - your thoughts?

  • It really depends on the approach your RE has. For instance, vitrification vs standard, and what day and what quality embryo is frozen. You can't compare a FET of a poor quality embryo frozen 2dpER with high quality blast. Also to consider, what your FET protocol entails (medicated or not and which meds if applicable, and minimum thresholds) and if you have lining or structural concerns. Acknowledging that statistics are not truth, you may want to review the SART scores for fresh vs frozen for your clinic. GL and sorry for your loss.

  • The problem with the statistics are that people who had a successful fresh cycle, do not do a FET. If you had a failed cycle, your chance of having another failed cycle goes up, so obviously the rates are going to be lower for FETs as most those ladies have a failed cycle under their belts.

Its my belief that if all other things are constant, there's no difference in success in fresh vs frozen. I have even heard that your odds are slightly better if you freeze all eggs after retrieval to transfer the following cycle after your body has recovered.

  • I have heard that the success rate is not as high-but that could be due to many different factors.  From what I've seen it didn't seem like the success rate was drastically lower.

If I had the oppurtunity to do a FET I certainly would.  Good luck, and I'm so sorry for the loss of your twins.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

My RE is of the opinion FETs actually have a better chance than fresh cycles since your lining and your body has had a chance to recoup from the the stim process.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. My RE told me his success rates of frozen vs. fresh are the same. In my experience, we had a failed ivf and success w/an FET. Good luck w/your upcoming FET!

  • I too was worried about this when my ET was cancelled and converted to an FET. My RE (along with another RE) explained that the new technique for freezing (within the last 3-5 years) is showing better success rates and it may be the way all IVF is done in the future. He is very modern and does a lot of research, etc. so I trust his judgement. His SART numbers are neck and neck on frozen vs. fresh from 2010, and he's almost positive frozen will exceed fresh for the next report. Now, I know there's a lot of factors that play into it as well, like PP's said, so this of course is not always the case. Nonetheless, it made me feel more comfortable. So sorry to hear about your twins and prayers for success with your FET.
