help with size for bridesmaid dresses!

Hi guys, I will be 19 weeks and 21 weeks pregnant at 2 weddings this summer. We are in crunch time to now order a dress. I am wondering how much are you guys showing at this point in your pregnancies? Do you think I should order 1, 2 or 3 sizes up? Thank you for the help.

Re: help with size for bridesmaid dresses!

  • Everyone is different, I'm 26 weeks and barely showing.  I just recently stopped fitting my regular shirts and switched to maternity shirts.  I would have been fine with just 1 size up on the dress.  But like I said everyone is different so I would order at least 2 sizes up.....it's easier to take in than it is to let out.

  • I just went for a dress fitting two weekends ago (at 17 weeks) and I was measuring at a size 10 and I'm normally a 4. I'm all belly though, not gaining in other places (except 1 cup size).  I'm in a wedding a month after my due date so I just ordered whatever size I was at the time.

You're most likely going to need alterations no matter what so I say order at least 2 sizes up!

  • Depends on the style dress, if it is fitted through the waist it will most likely need to be at least two.  If it is empire waisted with room in the belly then one may be enough, just make sure the girls have room to breathe, they will likely be sticking out farther than your belly at that point.

  • I ordered up two sizes and got some extra fabric b/c the dress was not maternity style and I wanted to be safe. As pp have said, it's easier to take in than let out. And I'm glad I did now, b/c the boobs have grown some more since then.

  • At 23 weeks, I am 6 inches bigger around the WAIST (and have gained 7lbs). Not the biggest part of my belly. I'm only keeping track because at 11 weeks pregnant, I had to order a dress for a wedding that I'll be 38 weeks pregnant at. I gave myself 10 inches to grow. I'm worried now that I won't fit into the fitted dress but there is nothing I can do about it at this point. Oh well!

  • I think everyone is different. But you can never go wrong with a bigger size cause you can always shrink it if need be as opposed to getting a small size you wont be able to do anything with it. hope this helps. =)

  • like pp said...everyone is so different....

with ds #1, i didn't start wearing maternity clothes until 26 weeks, so i would have been fine in the same size dress.

however, i think if i were to be in a wedding this time at 20 weeks i would order one size up.

  • Have you checked to see if the designer can turn their dresses into maternity dresses? Many of them do, depending on the style of the dress they can raise the waist/custom fit it to your measurements (obviously you'd have to give them a rough estimate of your measurements based off of what they are now).  This is what I did for a wedding when I'll be 32 weeks.  Call the store real quick and ask if the designer can do this for you (btw, our dresses are Lulu Kate so if you happen to be using hers then you can definitely get it in maternity!) :)

Depends on the style of the dress. I am in my brothers wedding and I will be  27 weeks and I could have killed my soon to be sister in law for the dress she choose. I am normally 4 and I ordered a 12.  Its satin long and tight. I just decided ( my hubby too) I would rather take it in then have it to small. If the wedding was 2 weeks from now when I'll be 19 weeks I would have been fine in a 6 or an 8. But I tried on the dress in the store with the fake belly they have which is suppose to be 3 months and thats why I ordered a 12. My boobs are D's normally and they are double DD's now ughhh . I have gained 9 lbs which is right on track.

Here is my lovely dress ( vomit)  thats the fake belly I am not really that big. lol

  • My brother's getting married in May, and I'm the MOH. I tried on & ordered a 14, and I'm usually 8-10 (depending on the designer). It's loose on top, but tight in the belly at the moment, but I'm going to let out the sheath under the chiffon. If my chest gets bigger, I won't have to take that in, but I have a feeling the seamstress is going to be redoing this whole dress. Lol

  • A friend of mine was in my brothers wedding while she was pregnant.  With her bridesmaid dress, we removed the zipper and put in a lace up.  It worked great and you could hardly tell it was different than the rest of ours.

  • Oh lord, I'm going through this right now myself. I will preface this by saying that I know the wedding is about the bride, and not to make it about me,  etc. But either way,  here's my story - the bride couldn't just make up her mind/tell her mother she just wanted us to go to David's so we could actually try something on (god forbid) so 9 or 10 weeks before the wedding date the mother of the bride dumps on us that "we (we?!) can't put this off any longer, we're ordering dresses from an online company that custom makes the dresses. Look at their website, pick a dress, measure yourself and give me your decision in 24 hours." Gee whiz, thanks. Anyways, according to this company's website,  at 17/18 weeks I was measuring as a size 10. So, this being my first pregnancy and knowing I would be about 7 1/2 months pregnant at the wedding, I figured, ok I'll add at least 2-3 inches to the bust,  waist and hip areas, which put me at a 14. So I ordered a 14. Fast forward 6 weeks and I clearly have not put on the inches I thought I would, picked up the dress and it is HUGE. Needless to say I was upset, and have to go get it altered. Plus there's still 4 weeks til the wedding.

Sooooooo, I would say if you are going to be 19 and 21 weeks at these weddings, go up by one maybe two sizes depending on the style and fabric choice, but they very well could still be too big in some if not all areas.  Hopefully your dresses aren't ridiculously expensive to begin with.

And to the woman who is in a wedding at 38 weeks - you are a more courageous lady than I!

  • Hi, I actually work in a bridal store.  Get measured now for what your size is for the company because they run small.  Use that as a starting point and figure out how long it takes for the dress to come in and how far along you will be.  At my store we usually estimate a size a month depending on growth.  So that usually will be 2-3 sizes.  They can always be altered if they are to big, but you want to make sure they are bigger for safety.  Dresses do not have seam allowance to let out.  Hope this helps.

  • I also wanted to emphasize that dresses for weddings are NOT american sizing they are european sizing.  It is typically a 1-2 size difference.  If you are normally one size like a 4 or 6, then when ordering a dress you would be measured and start in a 8 or 10.  If this is the starting point add another 2-3 sizes for pregnancy. Like some of the PP are saying they had to order larger, it is not because they are pregnant but because of how they are made and then having to add sizes on to where they fit at. Just wanted everyone to not feel bad about the sizes.  Cut the tag out!
