Breastfeeding

11 days past c section with twins and still no milk....help!

My girls arrived via c-section due to their positions (breech and transverse) at 37 weeks 2 days weighing in at 7 lbs 4 oz ans 6 lbs 3 oz. At the hospital we nursed, pumped and also did SNS. Before we left they were already gaining weight back.

Now at home we continued the SNS and pumping but I was still only getting colostrum (and very little of it).  This process took about 1.5 hours to complete for both girls. Now we have dropped the SNS and are trying to nurse each for 10 min and then going to the bottle along with pumping.

Do you ladies have any advice about how to get my milk to come in? I'm feeling that my chances of breastfeeding are drastically dropping because it has been double the amount of time for my milk to come in....

  • I am in the same situation. DS is 11 days old, and I am barely producing anything. He had a great deal of trouble latching the first several days, which we think put my body behind in m ilk production.  My LC has recommended some supplements (Mother's Milk Tea, and Fenugreek capsules) which have been helping a little. Also, having him continue to nurse, even if he isn't getting much of anything, and pumping after feelings for a few minutes. DS likes to sleep a long time between feelings, so she also frequently has me pumping halfway in between feedings.

If you have access to a lactation consultant, I highly recommend it. Ours is actually part of our pediatrician's office. She has been a life saver!

  • Congrats on your little ones!  I know it sounds crazy, but just put your LO's to the breast as often as they seem hungry....your body is a supply and demand system...you have to send the right signals to your body to let it know it needs to produce milk.

Also keep in mind that the amount you pump is not what you are actually producing...your babies are much more efficient than any pump, so you probably have a lot more colostrum than you think.  And if your body is still producing colostrum, its because its what your LO's need.  Just keep nursing and pumping as much as possible. I know its going to seem like that's all you do...but that's all you are supposed to be doing right now!

    Good luck :-)

  • If possible I would see an LC.

Were your twins through any type of fertility treatments?  I only ask because women who need fertility treatments to get pregnant are more likely to have supply issues (just has to do with the body's natural hormone regulation).  Now I am sure plenty of people who have fertility treatments still have a fine supply, but I am just saying that it is a risk factor for supply issues.
