Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Cough medicine?

I put a call into the doctor already to ask, but that was about 4 hours ago I haven't heard back yet..sometimes they tend to be really slow in responding to non-emergency questions.  Anyway, DD is 23 months and has had a really deep, croopy cough since Wednesday.  We can deal with it during the day, but at night it seems to get worse and she coughs so hard in her sleep that it's waking her up.  I really want her to be able to sleep well through the night so she can get better sooner.  Is there anything you can give a LO that's this  little, like cough medicine? If your LO had a cough like this, what did you do medicine wise or other? We're totally into natural remedies, so please share those too if you have them. Thanks!

Re: Cough medicine?

  • Zarabees is great, and there is a nighttime formula that contains meletonin to help little ones sleep.

  • Really? I've never heard of that so I looked it up.  It says it's buckwheat honey based. Is that ok for LOs? I thought you were supposed to avoid honey up to age 2.

annaruiz is a troll, so disregard what she says.

ETA:  I would put a second call in to your Drs. office.

  • Some say 12 months for honey, some say 2 years....zarabees label says over 12 months is fine. It really does work wonderfully and no worries about side effects or nasty chemical ingredients.

Yeah, I totally made this up. Give your kid some f-ing benedryl, that'll help.

  • @ OP-Most Drs. say honey is ok after 1 yr.  I would assume that the honey they use in an OTC cough medicine would be pasteurized and regulated.  Definitely put another call into your Dr. though re:  cough medicines for children.

Zarabees and any cough medicine for that matter is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.

Really? Definitely put in a call to the dr about a fooking cough? I bet you take your kid in for a fever and a hangnail.

On their website it says 12 months and up.

  • Have you tried adding a cool mist humidifier to her room for night time?  That usually helps L a bit.  We use a homeopathic cough medicine that is safe for 12 months+ too, but I had it ok'd with my pedi first.

  • Honey is ok after 1 year.  I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure any cough medicine is a no no before at least 2.  Cool mist humidifier is great for coughs as well.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a public advisory warning parents and caregivers against giving children under the age of 2 over-the-counter cold medicine and cough syrup because of the possibility of "serious and potentially life-threatening" side effects. The advisory cited decongestants, expectorants, antihistamines and antitussives, or cough suppressants.

Zarabees does not contain any of those things. Also pertaining to the fffc thread...they do cite antihistamines....so no benedryl, you drug loving parents.

  • you really don't want to suppress a cough at this age because then they are not getting the gunk out.  Not coughing it up can lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia.  If it is barky I would call you pedi and take LO in to get steroids to reduce the swelling in there so LO can recover easier.  Use a humidifier at night, steam shower before bed and suck LO's nose out really good using saline to loosen it up.

  • Just give the kid some red dye and it will all be ok. But seriously, for a cough use a humidifier, try sitting in a steamy room, things like that. I would use a little plain honey too

  • Have you tried any baby Vicks as well? When C is sick, we use this along with vapor bubbles in warm/steamy baths, cool mist humidifier and Benedryl.

  • My pedi always like to see my kids if they have a cough that tends to wake them up and keep them up so I would put a call into your pedi again. If it is a barky cough it could be croup

  • I had a similar issue with my LO and there isn't anything for kids under the age of 2 as far as cough medicine goes (unless your Dr. specifically prescribes it) I tried to ask the pharmacist what other options I can use and he said he couldn't suggest anything unless my son was 4 years and older. So I found Little Colds by Little Remedies honey elixir. The bottle says do not use in children younger than one. The ingredients are basically honey and purified water. I gave it to my son and he was able to sleep at night and he didn't wake up through the night coughing. Everyone's child is different, but its worth a try until you can get your LO a Dr. appt

I also used a warm humidifer and Mattys all natural chest rub which has eucalyptus, lavender & chamomile. Good luck!

  • Love Zarbees! Works really well for DD and its natural - mainly honey!
