Zumba?

My friend wants me to take a Zumba class with her...and I'm for it because I need to start exercising again and stop being lazy...but I've heard this class is fast and can be intense for newbies.  Anyone think it's a bad idea?  I can't find any real answers online if it's good or not for you...

Re: Zumba?

  • you should look up on the internet zumba for pregnant women they have a whole zumba class that is specific for pregnant women. supposed to be slower and less intense. not sure what it is called though i remember seeing it though when i was looking for the zumba dvds

  • If you haven't been doing it since before you were pg, I would be careful starting anything as intense as zumba. Unless it's a super beginner (if they have those)/ pregnant zumba class, I wouldn't go. Good luck!

  • I've only done it once but I didn't find it too intense. I also think u can modify it a little bit. My ob told me to just keep hr under 140
  • I haven't done Zumba since I found out I was expecting.  I'm in OK shape, but when I do the classes I definitely get very winded.  Some dances involve jumping around and very high intensity exercise.

You could definitely do it with modification and breaks, but the instructors tend to try and get everyone really going, so I'd maybe mention something before the class so you don't get picked on.

Oh this is good info to know. I started Zumba about a yr ago but it's been a while now and I would love to start again! To the initial poster - it can be intense to just start, I was sore all over after my first workout! So as pp suggested maybe a modified version would be better. In early pregnancy, it might just make you winded, sore and dizzy, so less intensity would be the way to go. Either way, go at your own pace, drink lots of water and take breaks when needed!

  • I'm 14 week and I've been doin Zumba since before I was pregnant.  it's a great cardio exercise and you'll be completely fine if you do it.  it's just like any other cardio workout, plus it's fun to just dance around and have a good time.  doesn't feel like you're working out, but trust me you'll sweat, lol.  if your just beginning, do the adapted moves (which they'll show you during the class) if you can't keep up or just want to take it slow.  you can always move into the regular moves once you get the hang of it, or you can just jump in and have fun.  just make sure you have water and don't push yourself too hard.  if you need a break take one.

  • I really appreciate the feedback, ladies.  I'm so mixed.  I'm starting to lean on saying no to this particular one just because I've been told it was intense and that person said she was super sore at the end.  I think I'm better off finding that pregnant zumba one either on dvd or a class...thank you so much!
  • It looks like a lot of fun but I know I'd have a hard time with it! Maybe get the DVD first?
