Concerned about Listeria but craving Jimmy Johns!

I would love Jimmy Johns for lunch today, but I know I'm allegedly supposed to avoid deli meat. I much prefer cold sandwiches, but I will have access to a microwave after I pick up my lunch. How long have you guys been told to microwave things to kill listeria? I've tried google, but have gotten anywhere between 5 seconds and 2 minutes? I'd love to enjoy my sandwich while being safe without cooking it to death :)

  • when I asked my OB about lunch meat she told me not to worry as long as I knew where it was coming from (my own fridge or a restaurant I trust) and to enjoy.  haven't given it a second thought since then.  besides, you can get listeria from fruits & veggies as well. it's all very rare

  • Yes, listeria is very real.  It is also very rare.  In recent years it has been far more prevalent in produce but no one's avoiding that and you're more likely to be hit by a car while picking up the sub :)  Go ahead and eat it.

  • Like PPs said, you are probably fine unless the meat has been sitting out for a long time. Still, avoid processed lunch meats when you can because the nitrates aren't especially good for the baby. Everything in moderation. :)

  • Great now you just made me crave Jimmy Johns too and there isn't one close by. I think I'll have to get some at work tomorrow. Also I think Listeria is a bigger risk at home where it may sit around for a while before it gets eaten. Restaurants have pretty high turnover on their ingredients.

  • I've had it twice- it's one of my few non-fruit cravings!  OB said it was fine (but she also told me to make sure to avoid the sprouts).  If you're worried, you can always heat up the meat for 30 seconds in the microwave...

  • Go ahead and get it! I love JJ's and have gotten it a couple of times already....MMmmm a Bootlegger does sound delicious!

When I asked my doc about it he said that the reputable sandwich shops shouldn't be an issue and did mention the deli meats from the grocery store sitting in the fridge for too long would be more of a concern.

  • I always get the veggie sub with avocado anyway ;-)

  • I was eating Jimmy Johns like crazy whenever we first found out we were pregnant up until our first appointment at 8 weeks. My doctor gave us all the no nos and he mentioned the lunch meat and lysteria... he said normally he just goes through all of those like the caffeine and such as a procaution however to take the lunch meat seriously. Because.... there was currently a case at the hospital and he said the effects of lysteria can be absolutely absolutely devestating. he couldn't stress it enough. He said if you are going to have it it should be plenty safe enough to microwave until it's warm. And boy let me tell you I am in love with Jimmy Johns turkey tom.... however I ask them to put the lunch meat on the side and i microwave for like 1:30 and add it to the sandwich... is it as good as a nice cold sandwich? No. However, I'd rather be safe than sorry with that. But like everyone said lysteria is very rare. But just because it's rare doesn't mean we shouldn't use caution.

  • Ugh. I've been eating the vegetarian. It was good the first 70 times, but I'm tired of it now. I'm also tired of Jimmy John's now since they couldn't care less about listeria concerns. You can read about my experience here: https://nixon-notes.blogspot.com/2012/08/jimmy-johns-hates-unborn-babies.html

Also, lunch meat is the first thing the CDC lists on their list of things not to eat while pregnant: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/pregnancy_gateway/infections-listeria.html/ They say it needs to be heated until "steaming."
