Parenting after a Loss

Barium Swallow Study

Aiden is having one on Friday because he continues to choke and gag through bottle feeds even with the preemie nipple- Wondering if anyone's LO has had this done and what to expect from it- Altho I work in the children's hosp here I have no idea what happens during this test. He has to be fasting for three hours prior which should be interesting- he can def manage that assuming they are on time...

  • I do these at work & the babies always do fine.  We tell people to bring their own bottle with them to put the barium in, and we thin down the barium a lot from how the adults take it.  We usually swaddle the babies with a sheet so their arms don't get in the way of their belly.  We only let one parent in, & have them stand at the head of the table to feed baby the bottle while the rad tech helps position the baby.  The babies always take the bottle no problem because they are so hungry by that point.  You will prob be able to see the video monitor of the procedure & it only takes a few minutes as long as the stomach empties quickly.  We also have the mom BF or FF after the test & then take another film.

Hopefully your little guy does well & has no problems.  Your hospital may have a totally different routine, but hopefully they let you come in for the procedure.

  • Ro had this done. They let both DH and I be in, but the nurse fed the bottle. It was very simple and Ro didn't mind the barium or being on the table one bit.
