adjusted age?

i think i am just a bit confused about adjusted age... my boys were born jan 2nd but weren't due till the 14th of february.  so they are almost 2 months old..but adjusted would be 2 weeks i assume.  how does that influence development then? would their milestones be based on adjusted age?  and how long does anyone consider adjusted age important?

Re: adjusted age?

  • Yes, their milestones will be watched for based on adjusted age. Pediatricians generally consider their adjusted age until up to 24 months if they were born significantly premature. It sounds like your babes were born at 34 weeks? They will probably consider the adjusted age until about 24 months. Typically they will be caught up way before then though.

  • so they were born about 36 weeks?  i dont think the adjusted age applies unless it's before 36 weeks, i could be wrong.  they are considered fully cooked at 37 weeks - singletons too.

  • The way pedi explained it is that she won't be concerned on how they are developing/weighing/etc based on actual birth date, but rather on due date.

  • my boys were born 34 weeks 6 days, and my pediatrician said at 2 months old, they would be doing things a 1 month old should do (like smiling, they're just starting), but they should be caught up by 6 months old.

  • ok thanks! they were born at 34 weeks,. that makes sense. they are just starting to smile too..or at least thinking about it :) we're looking forward to them being able to do a few more things. i really think they get bored sometimes! haha
  • I used to do EI evals, and we used adjusted age until kids were 24 months. However, many will catch up long before that. My 35 weekers are certainly caught up on weight and height (90-95th percentile based on chronological age!) but probably still a couple weeks behind in terms of motor milestones.
TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

Our pedi still takes it into consideration regarding their milestones even though they were born at 36w5d.
