Being Induced!?

Hi ladies! FTM here and I'm so torn because at my last appointment on Monday, my doctor said I was 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced and LO is very low; he told me that I could go into labor any day. I am 39 weeks today. He asked if I wanted to be induced before he leaves for a week this Saturday but I don't know what to do. :( A huge part of me just wants things to go naturally and then another part of me really wants my doctor to deliver because of his amazing reputation. I did meet the doctor who will take his place; she is very sweet but also very young; kind of scares me.

Any body in a similar situation or have any advice?

Re: Being Induced!?

  • The doctors at my hospital rotate nights and weekends.  As it turned out, my dr was NOT on call the night I gave birth.  I ended up having a different dr, who I meet for the first time at 2:30pm the day of delivery, deliver my baby.  It didn't matter to me at the time who was "catching" the baby.  If the dr couldn't make it on time, the nurse would have delivered the baby.  The people who work in the hospital have done this multiple times, so they should be very knowledgeable.

As long as you are a low/no risk pregnancy and no foreseen complications after delivery then I would wait.

  • I would be induced if it was me but I will be flamed here for saying it.  I have been voluntarily induced before 40 weeks with my other two and have had great outcomes.  Yes, I know it could be different with each pregnancy but it could be either way--if that makes sense,  Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don't think you will be flamed for saying that. Everyones choices about their birth will be different, and the mommies on this board are pretty open minded to that. I think there is very little judgement here on how your LO comes about, but very vast opinions about it as well.

OP, you have to do what you feel is best. If you are set on your doctor delivering and wont regret chosing induction for yourself, no matter the outcome, then induce. If you want the "natural labor" experience, then wait. No one here can tell you what is right or wrong for you.

  • Personally, I wouldn't be induced unless it is medically necessary, but I am going for a low-intervention birth. As PP has said, only you can make the best decision for yourself. I would suggest at least doing some research so you are making an informed decision.
