VBAC

Is the first time an indication of the 2nd?

My perinatologist let me know a couple of weeks ago that my scar was actually placed such that I was a candidate for VBAC should I meet the following criteria:

 - Spontaneously labor prior to 39w0d

- Have good fluid, weight, and blood pressure

Ever since then I cannot get the idea of a VBAC out of my head.  I do have some questions though!

First, this pregnancy has been totally different than with my daughter- no GD, no swelling (as of yet), no fluid issues, etc.  However, with my daughter I was induced to pre-e at 37w1d.  We did 2 rounds of Cervadil (the devil) and maxed me out on Pitocin two days straight.  I was still clamped tight as can be and baby hadn't descended.  I had a C-section (which after the induction was a breeze) due to failed induction and pre-e.

So, since I was NO WHERE near ready at 37 weeks and my body never even started to "get ready"-- is that an any indication of how I will do this time around?

  • 37 weeks is early to go into labor, so I wouldn't worry too much if your body didn't show signs of labor with your last pregnancy.

Honestly, having to go into labor by 39 weeks is not a sign of a VBAC-friendly provider. Is your provider willing to budge on the VBAC requirements at all? Is there a local ICAN group near you that you can contact and see if there are other providers in your area who will support VBAC?

  • I live in rural Missouri so I doubt we have a "local" ICAN group.  I am considered high-risk due to PCOS and the complications with my last pregnancy so that is the justification for not going past 39 weeks.

I guess I was just looking for some indication that it can happen? I have gone the past 30 weeks just assuming I was going to have a RCS and now I am wondering if it realistic to even begin to look into a VBAC or prepare for one?

It looks like Missouri has three chapters, not sure if any of them are near you.

I would think if you aren't having any symptoms you had during your first pregnancy, that's a good sign, and reason enough not to have to go into labor by 39 weeks.

Sorry not to be much help!

  • I wouldn't read too much into it.  Very few first timers show signs of labor at 37 weeks.  If you want a VBAC, ask your doctor if you could push that 39 weeks deadline back a little.  Obviously you don't want to risk anyone's health, but if you can get to 39.5 or 40 weeks it could be helpful.  GL.

  • I live in Perryville, MO and there is a Southeast MO Ican chapter that runs out of Cape.  I know it's not close, but right now they meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month.  Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks.  I live south of Kirksville, MO so it is a 4 hour drive to the nearest chapter.

  • No.  Each pregnancy and labor/birth can vary greatly.  Though, I agree with PP that 37 weeks is early for natural onset of labor.  It's not unheard of per se, just not that common.  If I were you, I would start asking about ways to keep your fluid levels and blood pressure in check in hopes of avoiding the need for delivery at 37 weeks.  And I would really try and get your OB to give you until at least your EDD for labor to start if you can.  Your body will prepare for labor at different rates each pregnancy, but there are things you can safely start around 36 weeks to help "encourage" your body (RRL tea, EPO capsules, etc).

FWIW, with DD, my water broke before labor started at 39w6d.  After a failed "induction" with pitocin and prolonged-ROM, she was born via c/s the following evening at 40w0d.

With DS, labor started the morning after having my membranes swept at 41w1d , and he was born the following evening via VBAC.

    HTH and GL!
