Do some babies only army crawl?

DD gets into the hands and knees position, takes two "steps" forward on her knees, and then slides to her belly because she knows she can go faster that way.  She's been army crawling for two months now.  I'm just wondering if it's common for army crawlers to just skip traditional crawling?

Re: Do some babies only army crawl?

  • I'm sure there are plenty of babies who only army crawl. I thought my DD would be one. She started army crawling just before 6 months and for the next 2 months had zero interest in regular crawling. Even when she could get to her knees she'd still slide back to her belly and army crawl. I think she liked it because she was so fast at it.Then, out of nowhere a couple weeks ago she just suddenly decided to regular crawl. So, your DD may regular crawl yet but if not, it's no big deal!

  • Yes it is possible. I just talked to the pedi about this because Ev does the exact same thing and the pedi noticed he wasn't crawling but was pulling up on her at his appointment on Monday. She said if they start pulling up and cruising and still are only army crawling it's more likely they'll just go straight to walking without ever really crawling.

  • My ILs and my nephew only army crawled. Most of them ended up being early walkers.

  • My husband only army crawled and just started walking early.  Caroline was pulling herself up before she transitioned from army crawl to normal crawl so in her case the idea that if they pull up first they won't ever do it was incorrect.

Hmm... well, she is already pulling up and trying to take assisted steps.  I guess it could go either way on the crawling!

  • There's a few in Stella's daycare that have skipped right past actual crawling.  I was talking to one of her daycare teachers this morning, mentioned that Stella still isnt' crawling but doing the butt scoot, pushing herself around backwards and whatever else...she gets to where she needs to go and the teacher told me that there are a few in her class or in the next room up that basically just bypassed crawling.

  • DS1 always prefered the army crawl.  He could do full belly up crawl but liked army crawl better for getting around.

  • I was wondering this same thing.

DS army crawls - and boy is he fast!  Anyway, he is starting to pull him self up.  We are thinking that he will go straight to walking.
