reoccuring fevers and viruses

Kellan since 5 weeks old has had reoccurring fevers which in the beginning were just low grade and now at 13 mths go up to 104.7. They come out of now where he will be perfectly fine, hyper , happy and not acting sick. Then its like he hits a wall and he has a high fever and usually it ends us up either at a dr sick visit or depending on how bad he is to ER.  Sometimes the virus they are able to name what the virus is other times its just another "virus".  For the last 6-7 mths it has been going on almost like clockwork 7-14 days. I haven't been able to go back to work yet because he wouldn't be able to handle to day care. He has seen an immunologist and she said he had low IGg but that wouldn't explain his viruses. He has seem almost every type of dr due some other issues but none of this would be related to the fevers and viruses.  I just don't think this is normal. How am i suppose to go work, if he literally is sick every time i turn around.... its like i am running in a circle and i cant ever get out of it. I'm stuck .....i don't know what to do anymore. I hope this makes sense Im so tired today from the 5 hours we spent at his doctors doing bloodwork...and still no answers.Confused

Re: reoccuring fevers and viruses

  • We went to an immunologist for this exact reason.  She asked if he was actually sick during the fevers and I said no, just a fever.  She said that it's not immunologically related then, he would be sick each time.  So she sent us immediately to rheumatology who decided to start in with PFAPA (Periodic Fevers, cold sores, sore throat and swollen glands I believe?)

We went through lots of testing, kept a fever diary, etc and then he gave us a medication, Cymetidine.  It's very good at pushing fevers out in kids and weakening them.  If the fevers didn't respond at all then we were going to pursue genetic testing.  There are a few genetic conditions that can cause periodic fevers.

However, for us once we got the prescription filled DS never got another fever.  For 6 months, every 2 weeks we got a fever like clockwork, for 5 days usually 105+degrees.  And then bam, they stopped.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

  • Try seeing an infectious disease doctor. DS had recurring fevers at 12 months that lasted for 3 months. He was wrongly diagnosed with Periodic Fever Syndrome. I met someone on this board that had a son with low IGG and fevers. I forgot what he was diagnosed with something like Transient......

This is so similar to Morgan!  Her fevers were always low grade (I think they said she had over 15 viruses before she was 3 months old!) until a few months ago when they have been 104.5 and lasted for a week, etc.  Her IgG and IgA were low and one of the others was low-ish so she was dx with hypogammaglobulanemia (may have spelled that wrong) from immunology at VCU.  Basically we just keep checking her titers (because they were non-existent and/or low) and go from there.  If she keeps getting fevers like this I am going to see a Rheumatologist though, knock on wood their doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it.

And you are right that it's not normal, it took us almost a year to get a dx from immunology at vcu, it was very frustrating.

DD1(4):VSD & PFO (Closed!), Prenatal stroke, Mild CP, Delayed pyloric opening/reflux, Brachycephaly & Plagiocephaly, Sacral lipoma, Tethered spinal cord, Compound heterozygous MTHFR, Neurogenic bladder, Urinary retention & dyssynergia, incomplete emptying, enlarged Bladder with Poor Muscle Tone, EDS-Type 3. Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

DD2(2.5): Late term premie due to PTL, low fluid & IUGR, Reflux, delayed visual maturation, compound heteroygous MTHFR, PFAPA, Bilateral kidney reflux, Transient hypogammaglobulinemia, EDS-Type 3

  • We go to VCU too. Do you see Dr. Irani ? (sp?) They actually called today to tell me his ig are still all low and that some of his titers arent as high as they are suppose to be. He currently now has pneuomina for the 2nd time in 5 months....so we are actually going to go see a pulmonary doc on the suggestion of his pedi. But I think we are also going to see a Rheumatologist too.
