Pregnant after 35

N/T scan perfect, Quad screen not...

Hi everyone! I am new in here and posted this on Aug board too but seems more fitting here? Im a lurker :)

I am 17 weeks and just got my Quad results...DS came back at 1:100. My N/T scan and bloodwork was normal and everything looked fine. I know the chances are 99% fine, 1% DS but I was definitely caught off guard when the results came in. Anyway, I am 34 and will be 35 when I deliver, and my Dr. said if I choose to get an amnio, I have to have it this week. My gut says no to amnio, it always has (they have been pushing it from the beginning bc of my age) but just wanted to see if any of you are going through this and what you are doing? I just thought since the first scan was good, all would be fine...I am not going to terminate, regardless, and will love this baby no matter what! Already do! Just wanted to hear from others bc it hit me like a brick today. thanks girls!

  • well..if your gut says no to amnio...listen to that!
  • Wouldl have to agree with pp; go with your gut!!  Don't let your docs push you into something you don't want!

  • My OB doesn't even do the quad screen if you have good results from the NT.  The NT is more accurate compared to the quad screen- 95% accurate v. 85% accurate.  If it were me, I wouldn't do the amnio at this point.  Is your Level II u/s coming up soon?  That might help alleviate your concerns.

  • We said no to the amino since we would not terminate. It seemed invasive if we weren't going to have any changes. We have thought of what would happen and prepared for it mentally. Our numbers were a little higher though. We came in at 1:224. I say follow your gut. You will love the baby no matter what.
  • you definitely should do what feels best for you and your baby :-)

It sounds to me like you already have pretty decent numbers, chin up I know the waiting and wondering and panic can set in easily.

  • I agree with all the PPs. Do what you feel is right. I never had an amnio for the same reasons, I would love the baby no matter what. Go with your gut.

  • Thanks everyone!!! Yeah, i did panic yesterday, mostly because for some reason i was completely surprised by the call (I actually had forgotten that i even gave blood last week). I know its not a huge deal, my numbers werent horrrrrible...and  I already am raising a beautiful boy with autism so I am quite familiar with special needs...just needed to talk it out :)  Thank you again!

  • This happened to me last month - the N/T scan was perfect and the Quad screen came back at like 1/280.

But I had another concern going on with the baby, the ventricles were enlarged in the brain.  Just under the recommended or wanted 10.  I think they measured at 9 and 9.5    So I got sent to a Peri who freaked me out and said that the baby could have all kinds of problems etc...

We did opt to do the amnio to have information going forward in case we needed a plan at birth.  My regular doctor did tell me that the Quad screen is one of the tests that he doesn't always trust and felt that the N/T scan was a much better test - if that makes you feel any better.

I would only do the amnio if you wanted to - go with your gut.  My amnio experience was not pleasant and while we got results that everything is just fine it was a stressful few weeks for my husband and I.

  • I'm 45 and I've tuned down all tests, including amnio.  I just don't see the point in finding out if there is a problem if I am not going to do anything differently (i.e. take good care of myself and, God-willing, deliver my baby in July).  At that point we will deal with whatever God has in store for us.
  • I totally agree ... go with your gut. I'm still trying to decide re amnio. We had really good n/t results, but I haven't seen my OB since n/t results so this week's appointment is decision time for us. It very likely would make a difference in deciding whether to terminate - impossible to tell until I'm actually faced with having to make the decision, of course - so 100% accuracy is really advisable in that case. My gut said no CVS, and I'm sticking with that ... so listen to your instincts and trust in your mother's intuition.
