  • To me, a middle name is where you can go a little nuts.  Like a family name that is really strange or antiquated, or a name (or even a word) that has special meaning for any reason.  I'm not a big fan of picking a mn just because it sounds good, or even just because it is a name you like.  I think it should have a special meaning (unless the fn fits this category).
  • I agree, we are using a name that's disappeared in family history due to having no boys... So that last name will be one of my babes middle names. Or it's nice to honor that special family member...

  • We really like the name Dean for boy but I don't want it to sound like we're announcing the president of a college... Dean MN LN as if his MN is his FN if that makes sense so I'm trying to get DH on board for an odd MN so it doesn't sound so formal.

  • To me, for middle names, there are no rules.

Personally though, I prefer a first name chose because I like it and a family middle name.

  • I don't agree that the middle name needs to be a family name or something meaningful. We chose a first name we loved for our daughter, and a middle name that we also loved and thought sounded nice with it. It is not a common "filler" name or anything trendy. It is old-fashioned and pretty, but has no special significance.

When our daughter was born, we did not have any family members we wanted to honor. Nobody close to us had passed away, and we didn't like the idea of choosing between living relatives and possibly hurting anyone's feelings. We love our daughter's full name and get many compliments on it. (Although some people ask if her middle name is a family name because it is old fashioned).

We are now expecting Baby #2 and since my husband's grandfather passed last year, we will be honoring him by using his name. If baby is a boy, we will use his actual name and if baby is a girl, we will use the feminine version of it. Because this name is taking the first spot, we are using our favorite names (with no special meaning) as the middle name.
