I went in today for my ET. They called on Sunday to let us know that all 6 embryos were doing well and they pushed us to a 5 day transfer. We met with our RE who said we had 1 great embryo, 1 good and the other 4 were not expected to make it. We decided to transfer the great one, and freeze the good one.
My doctor says that because I have a tilted uterus, he's going to use a longer tool to access it and I say okay. Everything starts and they are trying to get the tube into my uterus. The embryologist comes in with our one great embryo. After a while and a lot of pinching, I realize that this is taking much longer than my last ET. It is DEAD silent in the room. After about 15 minutes, my doc says that he wants to regroup because he's having a hard time getting around my cervix to the uterus. He says that the embryologist is going outside to "warm up" the embryo. The nurse tells me to empty my bladder a little bit thinking that would maybe help the transfer.
After a while, my doctor comes in and says they can't find the embryo. He says there are three embryologists looking for it in the tray. I ask if could be inside me and he says "yes, that is a possibility but it would be near your cervix and is no where in the right spot because I couldn't get the tube into your uterus." He then suggests transferring in the remaining good embryo that we were going to freeze, because apparently our great embryo is gone.
We said we needed time to talk. I'm so thankful that DH came with my to this appointment because I have no idea what I would have done if I was by myself. We were worried that I could have an ectopic pregnancy with the first embryo and if the second embryo took, then we could lose both of them. Also, we didn't have any confidence in our doctor putting the second embryo in the right spot. Through our tears and anger, DH and I decided that although the chances are low, we didn't want to risk losing our now one remaining embryo by either transfer or ectopic, so it was frozen. And our great embryo is mysteriously gone (or may be inside me -- no one knows. WTF)
I think I'm still in shock. I've never heard of this happening. We had prepared ourselves for so many outcomes from this cycle but this was not one of them. Has anyone heard of this happening? Ugh.

Oh my gosh. My jaw dropped reading this. I am so, so, so sorry that this happened to you. ET's are stressful enough without having something go wrong. I really, really hope that your good embie will pull through and turn into your take home baby.
Regardless of whether you have success or not, I think you need to take this up with their manager or director of the clinic. Since they stated that they lost your embie, they need to compensate you in fair matter. They did not follow protocol b/c this should not occur. They should have the catheter IN PLACE prior to transferring the embryo.
I'm really sorry that you now have all of this to worry about on top of thinking about the embie that they transferred. I am sending over T&P's that this will turn into success for you . Hang in there. ((Hugs))

Thanks for your notes, ladies. We are just baffled. I asked how often this happens and my RE said that it will sometimes happen in what they consider high risk transfers but I wasn't considered high risk.
You are all right that I need to find a new RE for our now FET.
Thanks so much for the support.
I am stunned. I don?t know what to say. I can?t believe this happened to you. Completely mind-boggling. I am so incredibly sorry. (huge hug)

Wow, I am SO sorry. Did you have a mock transfer? I don't know much about the law but I almost wonder if there is some sort of malpractice issue here. Might be worth looking into.

Maybe the embryo was determined and somehow made its way to the right spot. GL!
I really suck at staying pregnant
I did have a mock transfer, and the same doc did my embryo transfer last IVF cycle... Which is why I wasn't worried about something like this happening at all. Ugh.
Gonna have some wine now. Thanks girls. xoxo

I am so, so sorry. I couldn't even believe what I was reading. I had an awful ET experience, but what happened to you is... completely incomprehensible and absolutely horrible! I thought that they were supposed to put one catheter in through the cervix, and then there was a skinnier one that slid inside the other one with the embryo? So I don't understand how that could happen.
Sending you huge (((hugs))). I am so sorry for the awfulness you had to deal with. You completely made the right decision... and your RE has some explaining to do.

I think at the very least, you need to call the office tomorrow and make an appointment for 2 weeks to discuss this incident. And definitely refer to it as an "incident". You should be professional, but they should know how serious you are.
