? about rooting

Dumb question, but will a newborn root for any other reason besides wanting to eat?  I feel like my LO is rooting all the time, and I want to know I'm making the rught decision by putting her to the boob when she doers.  TIA!

    DS is constantly rooting. I'm pretty sure he can't be hungry that often. I think he assumes any discomfort he feels is hunger.

    Sometimes rooting can just mean they want to suck.  My LO is already a lb and a half past his birth weight so the dr told me the every 3 hour feedings were working well.  When is he is rooting in between a pacifier makes him very happy, which is how I know he wasn't hungry. If feeding and weight gain are going well you might want to try a pacifier.
