Pregnant after a Loss

Progesterone levels normal?

Hi everyone, I am 8 weeks along and have been on progesterone pills 200 mg every night sinc 5 weeks because level was 19.5 doctor wanted it above 20.  Since then my weekly levels have remained above 20 but seem tobe going down a little every week:

19.5

35.9

30.9

29

26.4

24

Does this seem like cause for concern or normal. I also go at about the same time each week with about the same amount.

Re: Progesterone levels normal?

  • I was on oral pills because of low progesterone and they had to switch me to vag suppositories because mine would go up like yours did but after I needed more the pills were not enough. The progesterone from the suppositories stays in your blood stream longer so it is easy to keep the level higher. He probably started you on pills first because your level was so close to 20. Just thoughts...I'm not an expert but it's what I am thinking.

  • Progesterone fluctuates day to day and even hour to hour.  As long as you are above the 20 you should be fine.  My doctor actually like to only see it about 10 for an un-medicated cycle.

  • Thank u ladies for your feedback:) very helpful!
  • I asked a very similar question a few weeks ago because my numbers were fluctuating greatly and there was a dipping trend.  I'm not on progesterone, but my doctor said that the fluctuating is normal.  As long as you are above 20, you are okay.

All of this. My RE also stated that you only need a level of 10 to sustain a pregnancy. Some doctors just like to see it higher.

  • Thank God someone is as stressed about the fluctuating levels as I am. Mine have struggled in the first tri to stay above 20. In 2nd it went to 30. He dropped me down to 1cc. Now it's 22. He said leave it but I told em if it drops below 20 were adding something in.

Im more nervous about it because my last pregnancy was terrible. I bled and cramped the whole time and 14-19 weeks cramped and threw clots. My water broke early and into labor I went.  The fluctuation is fine. I would say just above 20 is what you need. Mine fluctuated the whole time and no problems like last time.

Did you notice a hormone change right before your due for your pills? I get 2 shots a week and come Tuesday I'm a mess.

  • It is perfectly fine for your progesterone levels to fluctuate. I was on pills as well for mine and after I began taking them I asked the doctor for another blood test to check the levels and she said it was not necessary. I thought it was odd but went with it anyway. I also know that at some point the placenta takes over and the progesterone is kind of doing the job of the placenta until the placenta is able to. I think you still need higher levels of progesterone throughout pregnancy that you do normally, but I wonder if it some point the levels don't drop a little when the placenta takes over? At least that is the information as I understand it from my doctor. I questioned when she/he removed me from the pills and secretly took them a little longer just to be sure but that is how he explained it to me. Hope this helps! It sounds normally and might actually be a good thing to me! :)
