AFP test came back Positive trying to stay calm

Just got a call from my Doctor, how do you stay calm when they tell you that your AFP test came back with a positive result? They cannot tell me anything because it is inconclusive as to what is the actual problem, or if there really is one at all.

Can't see the specialist until next week. That seems like an eternity to wait.

I know there is a chance that nothing is wrong. Just need to stay calm, in the mean time I have to deal "pleasantly" with everyone elses problems. I just want to sit in my room and cry. Anyone else had this result and how did it all work out?

I am terribly upset.

I googled this....,hope it makes you feel more at ease.......

Diane Masser-Frye, a certified genetic counselor at the University of California, San Diego Center for Fetal Diagnosis. "Traditionally, about 5 percent of women who take the AFP test will get a positive result, but more than 90 percent of those will go on to have normal babies."

The only thing I can say is that the AFP test is a screening. a positive just means your odds are increased based on those results, and you'll need some diagnostic tests to get a 100% answer. Talk to you doc to see what (s)he suggests as a next step. fingers crossed you get more reassuring resuts from it. ((Hugs))

    Freaking internet at work sucks.

I did. With my daughter. They did a level ultrasound and everything looked great. The wait sucked, though. I was panicky, and irritable. So, this time, I opted for the amnio. I wanted to know 100%...99...from the get go.

Good Luck and keep us posted! (hugs)

Do you have your Level II u/s scheduled for soon?   That should be able to give you a lot more info about whether there is really an issue or not.

I had this link bookmarked from before I had my testing done -- it points out that 90% of women who get an abnormal result on the AFP screen turn out to have totally healthy babies.  https://www.pregnancyandbaby.com/pregnancy/articles/942707/understanding-the-afp-test

The odds are definitely still in your favor.  Try to hang onto that until you can get more definitive answers.  Good luck!

There really is no positive. Mine came back with a high suspicion. I put myself through the amnio. Everything was fine. It's a screening that has more false positives than not. Hang in there, breath.
