Parenting after a Loss

Maddie's first day of daycare

was yesterday and she was completely traumatized!!!  I feel like a horrible mother!  She only ate 4oz from 8am-3pm.  She kept refusing the bottle.  I got her home and she nursed for 45 minutes (I just let her hang out as long as she needed) and then she passed out.  I had to wake her at 7pm for her bath and then she fell back asleep and slept until 4am?!

Tell me she's going to adjust...because I just want to quit my job (yeah I wish) and go pick her up and go home.

Re: Maddie's first day of daycare

  • Michael started daycare on 1/31. That whole week, I looked like this:

My son refuses to eat there, for the most part. Yesterday, he ate 1.5 oz of milk & 1 oz of yogurt. One pedi says he'll adjust, another says he's made up his mind & won't change. We nurse for an hour every day after school.

The good thing for you is that Maddie is much younger than Michael, and thus more likely to relent. I bet she'll be fine!! It's a big adjustment.

((HUGE hugs)) This is really hard on a momma!

  • First off, ((hugs)). I know it is super hard taking your baby to daycare.

It is completely normal for them to not nap or eat well at daycare for the first few weeks. It takes them a while to adjust, and of course the weekend will throw it all off again.

DD was the same way. She didn't take a bottle well (still doesn't) and didn't nap more than 30 minutes the entire first day. She came home and nursed for forever, and conked out for three hours.

We are a month into it and she is just starting to nap better and enjoy her time there. Bottles are still a challenge, but she will eat 3oz at a time now. What we found works is that she doesn't like BM from a bottle, so we do half BM/half formula. She is BF'd at home so I guess she just prefers it from the boob.

Someone also suggested giving fresh BM rather than frozen. Sometimes, there could be a weird taste issue when frozen BM is thawed.

I can't honestly say that it is getting easier. It is still heartbreaking not being able to spend that much time with her. However, I have noticed that she is adjusting more and that helps.
