Hi ladies! I have posted a question regarding MTHFR before I think on here and on PgAL. When I was told in January "something was abnormal with the MTHFR" test, that was the only response I got. When I did research on it, I found there were different variations of the polymorphism. I requested my medical records and finally got them today. It says I have homozygous c677t MTHFR. After more research today, I saw many women take additional B vitamins, additional folic acid and baby aspirin. I also saw there were different views regarding the homocystine levels (they may not need to be elevated to have problems vs. if they aren't elevated, nothing is wrong). Mine were not elevated. I guess my question would be, who has thie variation and what did you do pre-pregnancy and once you found out you were pregnant? The only change my doctor did was add baby aspirin. Now my husband started a new job, and we will be a month in limbo without insurance, but if we TTC this cycle, I would find out I'm pregnant a week before the insurance would kick in and I don't want to have to pay for heparin or lovenox out of pocket if its crazy expensive. TIA! Sorry this is so long!

It's not thought to cause pregnancy loss secodary to blood clots or coagulation problem....but if someone has a history of clots/abruption their doctor might treat it differently. Ask any hematolgoist and they'll tell you it is linked to arterial blood clots.
MTHFR mutation has been linked to abnormal chromosomes in pregnancies - which is likely why it's seen in women with recurrent losses. The body cannot metabolize folic acid and this can cause problems with meoisis. This leads to an abnormal number of chromosomes.
I am hetero MTHFR and lost my first three pregnancies - likely all due to chromosomal problems.
So I took baby ASA (as a blood thinner - empirically it didn't hurt so why not), 4 mg folic acid daily and progesterone (because of the recurrent loss). My twin pregnancy made it. I started 4 mg folic acid a few months before getting pregnant with the twins.
Good luck.
I have heterozygous (1 copy). I also have factor v leiden, so some of this may be a combination of treating both. I have had many doctors with different opinions, so I will tell you what we did with each. I found out after my 3rd loss, and was told I would just need to take baby aspirin and possibly heparin in the next pregnancy. 4th & 5th pregnancies (new doctor) - took B vitamins, 4 mg folic acid, baby aspirin and Lovenox. 6th pregnancy (new doctor) - she said she "didn't believe" in any of that being necessary, so I took 4 mg folic acid and a different kind of injectible blood thinner (I can't remember the name right now). 7th pregnancy (DS) (and another new doctor) - baby aspirin, 4 mg folic acid and a higher dose of Lovenox. I also took progesterone since m/c #2.
Good luck!

I have exactly what you have. My OBs thought it had nothing to do with my losses. I took vitamins as a precaution. My OB did prescribe me 4mg of FA. I started BA, B6 and B12 on my own. I took that cocktail all before and during my successful pg.
ETA: Correction--I mis-read. I have hetero.
I'm homo c677t.
I take metanx (which is a converted b vitamin), 4mg of regular folic acid (but this is more because I already had a child with a severe NTD), and lovenox (when pg).
My homocysteine was tested after I had already been on the FA for a month, and they were normal. I don't know what my levels were like previously.

I was on 3mg FA and baby aspirin along with a prenatal while TTC and during my pregnancy with DD. Even now I'm still on baby aspirin to counteract any problems I may have with clotting due to my birth control. I can't remember the exact copy I have but it is homozygous MTHFR. GL!
