Glucose test?

I had my GD test today and failed with a 170. How common is it to fail the 1 hr and be just fine for the 3 hr? With DS, I failed to 1 hr and passed the 3 hr but this time around I have been having high blood pressure. Does high blood pressure put you at greater risk of getting GD?

Re: Glucose test?

  • I have read that most people (like 85%) who fail the 1 hr pass the 3 hr.  It's a stat-take it for what it's worth.  I'm not sure if the HBP increases your risk for GD though.

  • I have a post below with all of my numbers in it, but I failed the 1 hour with a 168 and passed  the 3 hour, so there is hope!  I don't know about the high blood pressure, but my reading did indicate that stress can be a contributing factor to failing.  Since the day before my 1 hour, we had to put our dog to sleep, I made myself take the day off before the test and just completely relax.  Don't know if that helped or not, but it was a welcome break, in any event. Good luck!

  • The majority of people who fail the 1-hour pass the 3-hour.  A PP said like 85%.  I've heard closer to 70%, but it's still the majority.  I failed my 1-hour and passed the 3-hour with all normal numbers.  Don't fret.  The absolute worst thing that can happen is you fail the 3-hour and have to have your blood sugar a little more closely monitored by your OB's office.  Everything will be alright.
  • As the others said, a high number go on to pass.  I failed the 1 hour, and passed the 3 hour no problem.

As for HBP and GD - it's the other way round, from what I understand.  Having GD puts you at greater risk for b/p issues.  Given that GD is pretty much about how well your pancreas produces insulin with hormonal interference, I don't think b/p would matter.  Mine has been elevated for awhile and as I said - no GD.

  • Lots of people fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour...

It could have been something as small as what you ate the night before or if you had something to eat before your test.

Don't worry till you have the 3 hour test. GOOD LUCK!

  • It is very common. I know a lot of people it has happened to, my self included, both pregnancies. My first pregnancy, I failed the 1hr with something like a 183, but passed the 3 hr. And a few weeks ago I failed the 1 hr with 139 and passed the 3 hr.
