Austin Babies

San Marcos/NB ?s

Jocyo?  Anyone else in that area?  Give me the lowdown on living in San Marcos/New Braunfels.  Are the public schools good?  Private schools?  Neighborhoods?  Things to do for the kids?  Things to do for me?  I know NOTHING about the area except for the university in S.M.

Thank you!  :)

Re: San Marcos/NB ?s

  • While I love San Marcos, and I loved living there in college, there is NO WAY I would live there now. There are way too many people in town during the school year. Traffic is crazy! It's so nice during Christmas break and over the Summer.

I would much rather live in NB.
  • I agree I wouldn't want to live in SM, and since your stuff, job & business is north of SM in Austin I personally would not want to live in NB if I were you.  Have you looked into Kyle or Buda, those are between SM and Austin.

  • I have heard good things about lots of the public schools around here.  There are 2 or 3 private schools and those are supposedly great too.  The boys go to a methodist preschool and I love the teachers there.

Lots of great neighborhoods around here, they're building new houses every day.  It seems like the recession in real estate hasn't affected NB at all.  I have several friends who listed their house one day and sold it within a week--and both houses were in sad shape.

There are things to do for kids and for adults--NB, being a small town, has the stuff you'd expect from a small town:  county fairs, parades, fireworks in the park, free movies and music at the park.  There's Schlitterbahn, of course.  The rivers are great (and free, for the most part).  There's a public pool.  The public park is nice, there are a bunch of small neighborhood parks that we like to go to, there's a lot of church playgrounds where we crash also.  There's the Children's Museum, which is very nice.  A great new movie theatre.  Umm, what else do you want to know?  Any specific questions?

A drawback of living here is the lack of great stores (no good bookstore, but there's a Hastings, which is ok) and no public transportation.  You pretty much have to drive everywhere because there aren't many shopping centers.  We got a great new HEB that has all double carts!  It's lovely.

  • I'm in Kyle and love it, if you can stay that far north. We're 29mins from downtown Austin and 15mins from SM. The area is really coming up, we live in an unincorporated area, still pretty rural, but there's a lot of subdivisions and building going on. Schools are pretty good, from what I hear.

I agree!! I am in Kyle also and I love it!

  • I live in Kyle, about 15 min from San Marcos.  I went to college in SM and I wouldn't live there again.  I loved it in college, but not now that I have a little one.  Kyle is pretty nice and NB is pretty nice too.  SM has some stuff for kids to do, like Wonder World but not a whole lot more.  There is a private Baptist school off of RR 12.
  • I didn't realize there were so many of us in Kyle!
