Question about Prometrium

I went to the doctors office this Saturday to have progesterone blood work done. My results came in and the positive is that I did have a good ovulation but my progesterone levels are 9.7 and they want to see them at 15. I have been prescribed 200 MG of ORAL Prometrium to be taken vaginally twice a day. Has any one else had to do this? If so, did you suffer any side effects from the medication.

Re: Question about Prometrium

  • I did. No effects aside from the ickiness of it all. Wear a panty liner. All.the.time.

  • Oh yes, BTDT. Our first cycle my progesterone was 9.0 at the check, so in future cycles I was prescribed them as a matter of course. They are pretty nasty. I tried pantiliners, but ended up needing a full-on pad during the day (nighttime was a little better since you're less mobile). No side effects other than the ickiness (and maybe a headache? not sure if I'm remembering correctly).

  • My progesterone was only a 6 last cycle, so I'm starting the supps this cycle.  Now I'm excited.  (Sarcasm!)

  • Thanks everyone for responding. I was informed that no one really has side effects from the medication other than the discharge. So we continue to wait to find out if I'm pregnant or not.

  • Uh...not so fast on the lack of side effects.  We did 4 IUI cycles before getting our BFP, and I was on prometrium for the 2WW every time.  I was nauseous, exhausted, and moody as hell.  It's essentially mirroring the side effects of early pregnancy, making the 2WW unbearable as it is, since you'll just think you're pregnant.  After our pregnancy was confirmed, they kept me on prometrium as a precaution through about the 11th week.  By that time the discharge was the worst of it, and I was used to it!  Buy stock in pantyliners, and if you can lay down for a few minutes after you take the pill, it will help absorb.  Good luck!!

  • Well thank you eclausenlee...because I have been feeling  nauseous, exhausted, and horribly moody. I just assumed that I needed a break from work. I have only been taking this since Saturday.

  • I've been on the same thing for at least the last 4 cycles. I think everyone reacts to it differently. some people have early pregnancy symptoms, some people don't have any symptoms at all. some people need to use a full-on pad, some people don't even need a pantyliner. I've used pantyliners but honestly most of the time I don't bother because I just haven't really had issues, although I would advise anyone who has never been on it to use them at least for the first cycle because you never know.
  • I thought it was just the stress of ttc at first, but then I realized that I only had those symptoms during the 2nd half of each cycle.  Fingers crossed for you!!
