Oh no! I got a redhead!

I have red hair and I always dreaded having a red-head as a child. Don't get me wrong. I have grown to love my hair color...but I know what is in store for my poor, sweet, beautiful boy. People who don't have red hair have always said how great it would be if my baby was a red head too. Little do they know that he will be subjected to strangers touching his hair and the torment of classroom bullies.

Anyone else a red head who had a red head for a child?  What are your thoughts?

  • From from what I read online red hair is a dominant trait so it's not too surprising you have a red haired child. There's not any red hair anywhere on my side of the family but DH has some definite redness to his brown hair including red hairs mixed in to his beard and our DD has strawberry blond hair right now. Don't know if it will fall out and change colors but right now it's certainly not just blond.

  • I have red hair (we haven't had our baby yet though) and for some reason my hopes for our childs hair depends on gender; I won't mind if we have a girl with red hair, but if we have a little boy I would rather him take after his dad in the dark brown department ;)

  • I am a brunette Italian and our son came out bright red! Daddy was a flaming redhead when he was younger and now looks more dirty blonde. So, I assume Seth will be the same way. I was very surprised. I thought my genes would be dominant. Not the case! There is no discernible trace of me in this child at all! Even my side of the family admits to this.

  • I don't have red hair but my older sister does.  Well, we've joked for quite some time that she had "my child" as her youngest could quite literally be my kid.  I've apparently had her child...I think he's going to be a red...in different light his hair looks different, but it's looking more and more red each day.

I feel the same way-- maybe my apprehension is because I have a boy.

  • My big sister has red hair and although she sometimes hated it growing up, she really wanted a redheaded child.  Instead, she got two with light blonde hair.  The way I see it every child is going to get picked on for something.

Red hair is beautiful and you grew to love it and so will your son.

  • I was very red as a child, now it's more strawberry blonde. DS seems to have strawberry blonde too. DH has dark brown hair.

  • I don't have red hair, but it is very dominant in both of our families. I had a c-section, and was kind of out of it when DS was born, but the first thing I remember hearing after he cried was every single nurse shouting "he has red hair!" Big Smile

  • He will be unique and get extra attention his entire life (sometimes for good sometimes for bad).  Embrace it!
  • DH had bright red hair as a child and is now more of a strawberry blonde. I have light brown/dirty blonde hair...and DD has strawberry blonde hair! It's looking more red everyday. DH and I have always thought we'd have red-headed kiddos.

  • DH has very ginger hair (he is english so i would never say red to him).. our ds has strawberry blonde hair but it is getting more ginger by the day.  i actually wanted a ginger hair baby so i am quite happy!

  • DS1 is a ginger ( I also enjoy calling it this instead of redhead).  DH was born blond but later turned brown after puberty.  I naturally have dark brown hair that in the summer would turn auburn from the sun.  There is red hair on both sides of our families so I wasn't suprised that DS1 turned out ginger.  It is actually really pretty in that it is not bright red and depending on the light it can even look more auburn or light brown with red highlights.  See picture below!!

  • I am a redhead and have always loved it!  My hair is not the flaming orange color and is stick straight so I have always gotten complements on my hair.  Both of my sons now have red hair and my daughter has brown hair.  I wish my daughter had red hair as well but she is beautiful with her brown hair.  I think kids will always find something to make fun of each other for so I am not concerned with this at all.  I occasionally had kids try to make fun of my hair color but it was such a lame attempt I was never really bothered by it.  Embrace it...we are special!

  • Dh and I are not redheads, and DD2 is a redhead! I think it's the cutest thing ever b/c it's different. But I'm sure that it's different BEING a redhead.

  • I always had the hots for the red-haired men when I was in the dating world.

DH has strawberry blonde and I love it.

Just be sure you don't allow your feeling to subconsiously affect him.  He may have no issue with it at all, but may start to if he feels like his mommy does. Kids are amazing at picking up on stuff, KWIM?
