fever for 5 days?

LO has had cold/flu symptoms for over a week and has been feverish for 5 days...is that a normal length of time to have a fever? I've been giving infant ibuprofen every day, and it will go down but always come back up at some point. I'm worried there might be something else wrong, but I don't know. Whenever I have had a fever it last a day or two at most.

Re: fever for 5 days?

  • DD had a fever for two days and they wanted to see her since she wasn't breaking it with meds. They didn't find anything but offered the flu test. I declined because the fever was her only symptom. The dr said to come back if it lasted more than two more days. It broke two mornings later so we never went back.

Since its been 5 days I would give your pedi a call an see what they say. Could be an ear infection too...

  • first off, how high a fever?  If its low grade, say 100.5 or less, It could just be a virus causing the fever, but, it also could be an ear infection or chest related.

Every time my lo has had a fever lasting more than four days or higher than 102, he has had an ear infection. He only had runny nose and cough symptoms, never once was pulling at his ears.

So, I would probably give the pedi a call and maybe bring lo in to get checked out.  I hope lo feels better soon.  We are on day 6 of antibiotics for sinus and ear infection. =(

  • LO just had a fever last Sunday-Monday, it broke Tuesday and Wednesday, came back Thursday-Saturday. We initially went to the doctor on Tuesday, they said it was a cold, we called on Friday to talk to a nurse who said if the fever didn't go away on Saturday to go in. Saturday the cold turned into a double ear infection. Now, we have meds. Her fever was 100-101.

  • Sorry LO is sick :( We are on night 4 of a fever, as well.  It's been fluctuating between 101-102 pretty consistently but has gotten as high as 103.7.  She went to the doc the first day (Thursday) and her ears were fine, chest clear.  She has since developed runny/congested nose and today a cough.  I am praying it doesn't go to her chest.

I've called the pedi several times and they told me that she could run a fever until Monday and that it was normal. If she is still running a temp in the morning  or her other symptoms are getting worse, I'm bringing her back to the doctor.
