how was your l&d???

Hello I'm wondering how was everyones labor? Well what I mean exactly is, how long did you push and how far were you when you started pushing? See one of my friends asked how the labor and delivery went and I told her my story, which was my water broke, I went to l&d,, made it to a 7 dilation before getting the epi, then they let me sleep till about three hours later the nurse woke me up because I was at a ten and they wanted me to get up to start pushing. My Dr got there about 40 min later (I still had not started pushing still) and he tells me to push,.I push eight times and out came my baby! She didn't believe me and also said at her hospital they had her pushing after she got her epi when she was dilatedat a five. I know all hospitals are different but was it weird my hospital just let me sleep or did anyone else do this? That clicky pole a couple posts down got me thinking! Can anyone clarify if its true they make you push before you get to a 10 dilation?

Re: how was your l&d???

  • I'm pretty sure if you start pushing before you are fully dilated you can tear your cervix, and the baby's head is not exactly going to fit to come out at that point!

My dr. had me sit at 10 cm for about an hour before I started pushing (I had an epidural and was asleep) and the baby descended a lot during that time. Then I pushed for about an hour.

  • Long. From the time my water broke to when I had DD it was 54.5 hours. I was at 10cm for awhile, 3 hours maybe because there was still a lip of my cervix in the way and I had no urge to push once I got to 10cm. When I did start pushing it was 3.5 hours to get DD out.

  • I'm almost positive you cannot push until you are 10cm otherwise you will cause swelling of the cervix and baby may not fit even when you are fully dilated.

My water broke, 2 hrs later I was at the hospital dilated to 9cm, 1 hr later I got the urge to push, 1hr of pushing and baby was here med-free. So start to finish was 4hrs.

  • I asked at 8cm if I could try to push, thinking it might make me progress more. My nurse said no way... It could rip my cervix, cause swelling, and make me have a csection. They wouldn't let me even think about pushing until I was 10 and 100%.

  • I went to the hospital at a little after noon and was 3cm around 1:30, they then gave me the epi at around 3 and I started to push at around 6:10 and had DD at 6:30. My labor was very short, my OB couldnt believe it since it was my first.

  • My last OB appointment before going into labor, I was 4cm dilated and at least 60% effaced.  When we got to the hospital and were admitted, I was 5 cm dilated.  I got the epi at 6cm and then relaxed/slept until I was 10 cm.  After pushing for 2.5 hours, DD was born.

  • Thank you ladies! I thought it didn't sound right, I'm a ftm so I didn't know too much nor have the experience, but I just couldn't believe it that they would let her push that whole time,I think because I was fortunate to have a quick delivery she didn't want to tell me how long she pushed before delivering her baby, but I don't see it as a contest, we both had our babies and that was that. But thank you all for clarifying that for me, I really appreciate it!!!!

  • I think what her hospital did was weird. I was unintentionally tensing/pushing at 5cm and it caused my cervix to swell which does the opposite of dilation. I got an epidural to help relax and literally 20 minutes later I was at 10cm. I know that doesn't happen for everyone but that shows how much the tensing/pushing was hindering dilation for me. They didn't even have time to place the catheter before it was time to start pushing.
