DS has been going on his potty here and there since about 16 months. We've never really pushed the issue because we just weren't ready to commit since he's so young. Now at 22 months he goes on it a lot at home, and wants to whenever we're out at other places. He only pees on the potty. He tries to poop but hasn't yet.
I'm wondering what the best thing is to do. Daycare won't assist with PT until he's at least 2. DH is home 2-3 days a week and I am home on weekends. I will be home all spring break in a couple weeks so I'm thinking of trying a little more then. Then I will be home all summer.
I'm just wondering what the best thing is to do... training underwear, pull ups, naked, diapers, etc. He's pretty small so a lot of those things don't fit him. He wears size 4 diapers and still wears 12m pants and shorts.
Re: Early PT
no pull ups!
I just let my daughter run naked, I 'checked' in with her about every hour and put her on the toilet (only willingly) she quickly started alerting me and accidents became a thing of the past.
Even if your DC won't help him learn the toilet will they take him if he wears underwear? I would think teaching him to use the toilet and then the DC putting him in diapers would be counter productive.
Little Rose is 2 1/2.
We PT our kids "early"- they were 17 & 15 months old. One day we just went right into underwear- no diapers ever (not for naps or bedtime). It was very simple and stress free. The first day we just took them every 30 min (you probably don't have to do this since your LO already goes on the potty). We congratulated them for having dry underwear (explained to them that underwear should be dry). The next day we took them every 1 hour- they got 1 M&M if they went. We did not play on the potty/read books and the potty stayed in the bathroom- it was do your business and get off. By the 3rd day we took them every 2 hours. Because of their ages we did not expect for them to tell us- our goal was for them to hold it every 2 hours. However, by day 5 they were telling us. We were accident free after day 2-3 and never had any regression issues. Right away they stopped peeing during their naps. As for bedtime- they would go to bed at 8pm and we generally go to bed @ 11pm so we would just wake them up and have them go potty. We did that for maybe 2-3 weeks and after that we stopped and they either woke up dry or woke up in the middle of the night asking to go but still always woke up dry. We had no issues with pooping- I think I gave them high fiber oatmeal for the breakfast the first week to keep it soft.
Again, it was very easy- I could count on 1 hand how many accidents each child had. My kids are on the smaller side too and of course given their ages when they PT it was hard to find underwear (my 15 month old DD was wearing 9 months cloths!) but they fit fine into Hanes 2T- I did wash them on hot to shrink a bit and had to roll the tops (my DD still can't wear girl underwear- boy underwear is just more slim) and of course, prints and colors fit smaller than white.
Best of luck!
