Baby Names

Baby explosion on my Facebook Wall. All uncommon names!

There have been SO many babies born to my facebook friends in the past day or so. It seemed like every other hour someone was posting a picture of a cute, wrinkly newborn. Almost all of them had uncommon names, so I thought I'd post them here to get reactions from others.

boy:  Knox (not that uncommon anymore, but still not used much here)

girl: Livingston (NN Liv)

girl: Iylee (eye-lee)

boy: Scout

boy: Tate

girl: Sadie (again, not uncommon, but not over used here)

Your thoughts?

Re: Baby explosion on my Facebook Wall. All uncommon names!

  • The only one I would even come close to liking is knox. And I don't even really like it. ;)
  • Definitely not a fan of Livingston (pretentious?), Iylee (that was hard to even type!) or Scout (sounds like a dog's name to me).

I don't mind  Knox, but have a feeling it's becoming popular only because Brad & Angelina used it.I know an adorable little boy named Tate so that's not weird to me and I LOVE Sadie - it's on my short list for a girl.

  • Sounds like they all live in the south and are trying to be trendy. Weird.
  • Only one I'd ever even remotely consider is Sadie.

Lol. Guilty of the living in the south part. :) Are we really that easy to peg?!

  • The only one I like is Sadie. Livingston is absolutely horrendous.

  • I only remotely like Tate and Sadie.

    Iylee is horrible.

  • Love: Sadie and Tate (these are refreshing to see - love them, underused)

    Awful: Knox, Scout....

    Especially gag worthy: Livingston, Iylee

  • I love the name Sadie but the rest...I'm not fond of!

  • Knox- more of a middle name to me. I wouldn't use it because it's a place name to me.

Livingston for a girl?? Yuck. Thank goodness for the nn Liv.

Iylee. Is this a smush of Isla and Kylee? Terrible.

Scout. Like My Pal Scout? ;)  I love TKAMB, but even in the book it was a girl name. I designate this one as dog, middle name, or nick name.

Tate. I teach a Tate. I don't hate it, but it's nms either.

    Sadie. LOVE. I love Sadie.

  • I love Sadie.

I hate everything else! Haha! :(

  • I had basically the same reaction to them as you all did. Every time a new baby pic popped up I was curious about the name and every time I ended up with a quizzical look on my face. Glad it wasn't just me!

(I do like Tate and Sadie though.)

  • My friend named her daughter Ily.  It stands for" I love you".  I thought it was sweet, but in the same vein as Nevaeh.

I love Sadie, but my grandmothers neighbor had a dog named Sadie, so that was a non starter for me.

Livingston is HORRIBLE and pretentious.  Liv is a cute nn though.

  • I had a classmate named Tate growing up and know a couple of Sadies. I know Knox isn't well received, but it's a family name for me (and the name of an old family friend) so it's one I would seriously consider if it didn't sound horrible with my LN.

  • Knox- I always think of Knoxville, the city, and then the surname.  I don't get it as a first name at all.

Livingston- Awful for a first name especially a girl.  I think they wanted to use Liv but wanted to come up with something different and more "unique" than Olivia.

Iylee- I had to read it at least 5 times before I realized the first letter was an 'i' and not a lower case "L".  I couldn't figure out why they weren't pronouncing the first "L".  Also, I really don't think you need the "i" and the "y".  It falls in the trendy "lee" category and I agree with pp that it seems like a smoosh between Isla and Kaylee.

Scout- I know Bruce Willis has a daughter named Scout.  I really don't think it should be used for either gender.

Tate- meh, it's ok.  Well, stellar compared to everything above.

Sadie- I like Sadie a lot, definitely the best on the list.

  • Wow.

I think Livingston for a girl's first name is dreadful.  The super popular Olivia would be FAR preferable to get the nn Liv.

I like the sound of eye lee, but much prefer the Finnish spelling of Aili.

I like Scout better on a boy than on a girl, but only as a nn.  An official first name of Scout only seems appropriate for a dog.

The rest are nms, but okay.

  • Eek.

I read Iylee about five times, including the phonetic pronounciation, and I STILL kept thinking it was L-y-l-e-e with a lower-case 'l'.

Scout is an awful first name, boy or girl. It's a dog's name, or a nickname, or at most a quirky middle name, but I hate it as a first name. I think Livingston is silly and pretentious. I'd rather just plain Liv.

Knox and Tate are NMS but not too bad. Sadie is kind of cute.

  • Knox is ok, but I wouldn't go with a Brangelina name.

Livingston is terrible for a girl. It sounds very very masculine. I like Liv though.

    Iylee is awful.

    Scout and Tate are fine.

    I like Sadie a lot.

  • Sadie is nice...the rest are blah to me!

  • I like Scout (but for a girl), Sadie, and Tate.

  • Yeah, Iylee is going to go through life making people think she can't find the shift key. I foresee a lot of school grade challenging in her future--"No, that's not a typo in my name, that's my name."

Tate is not QUITE my style but it's cute, and it's an actual name, so it works.

I've seen a lot of people who think Sadie is more of a dogs name but I think it's nice. I do have a dog named Evelyn, so... yeah. ha.
