Another crazy FTM worry!

When our LO is in the cradle next to our bed, she is swaddled and is right next to our (baseboard) heat. But every time she wakes up, her hands are as cold as ice! Sidenote - our version of "swaddling" involves her hands being free since she HATES being swaddled! She likes to stretch out. Everythting else about her is toasty warm. I'm pretty sure it doesn't bug her - but still! Is this normal? I don't really want to put her to bed with no scratch mittens cuz she's not a huge fan, and it would probably just make her fussy during bed time. Should I do it anyway? I feel like a bad mom letting this happen!

Re: Another crazy FTM worry!

  • Mine likes to have his hands free too, and sometimes had colder hands when I heck him. Other times he has his hands tucked under his chin or neck so I assume if it bothers him that is his solution?  I wouldn't worry about it, she'll let you know if she is uncomfortable.

  • I could have written this one!  DD doesn't want her arms in the swaddle either so her little hands get colder than the rest of her.  But because she is so small (6lbs 3oz) most of her pj's go over her hands so it helps...maybe put LO in something a little big so it goes over his hands and they you won't have to use the mittens?

  • our baby doesn't want his hands in the swaddle, but at night we force them in there....and he's fine with it.

  • They don't have as good of circulation as we do so cold hands and feet are normal, if I remember correctly. DS1 almost always had cold hands and feet, but he haaated mittens and socks, so the old ladies at church would scold me that I need to put socks on my poor baby *eye roll* lol. He turned out just fine :)

  • Yea babies just have cold hands, it doesn't bother them as much as it does us.
  • Our lo hated to have his hands tucked into his swaddle blanket as well but once he calmed down he drifted to sleep for a good four hours. At his two week check up we asked had asked the dr about how he didn't like keeping his hands in the swaddle blanket and how his hands would get cold as well and he would clasp them together or put them under his cheeks and the dr said it is somethingnewborns do to get warm. I would try tucking them in the swaddle blanket and even is your lo is fussy at first they should calm down.
