...is to be an advocate for your child.
First it was DS' poop issues. I started doing research and landed on a dairy intolerance. The pedi brushed it off, but the LC took me a bit more seriously and agreed when I re-explained all his symptoms. His poop is now better but we're dealing with other issues now.
Now it's his upper lip tie. He's had a bad latch, low vacuum, but I never recall him being checked for a lip or tongue tie. It's the first question that people ask on kellymom or on the BFing board here, so I pushed the issue today at our pedi appointment when I said that after 3 pedi visits, 5 LC visits post-hospital, no one has looked from what I remember. She agreed with me on the upper lip tie and we now have an ENT referral. The pedi appointment today went really well, she really listened and answered all of my questions and went into further detail when I brought up something I'd read about, validating what I had read.
I hate to be *that* mom and referring to internet research, but it's helped so much. I'm ok with being wrong, but when there's something wrong with him and I am getting brushed off, I have to push harder.
Re: The #1 thing I've learned so far
Good for you for doing all that. I switched DD's pedi because he was so dismissive of my concerns. I'm sure there are helicopter parents that ruin things for the rest of us, but if I have a concern, I expect to be taken seriously.
We had an ENT appointment for DD's upper lip tie this past Monday. The ENT doc said she didn't need surgery, which was embarrassing for me as I was 100% positive that she had a level III tie, but on the other hand I'm glad I'll never wonder what-if.
Boo... but I agree, better to not wonder what-if.
I'm just trying to exhaust all options before accepting that DS' issues just are what they are. She agreed it's tied, but we were given fair warning they may not do anything until it affects speech or teeth. The most I can do is try.
