How are your pets adjusting?

We have 3 cats and a St. Bernard.  Our cats have pretty much ignored the baby except for a few sniffs now and again.  Our dog has totally turned into "Nanny Molly" - she has to know where the baby is at all times, supervises diaper changes, and tries to give him kisses when he cries.  We are still working on some excitement issues...like when she sees his little toes - she goes bonkers and wants to nibble them!  So far, they all seem to have adapted really well, so we are really happy.

Re: How are your pets adjusting?

  • We have a cat and a dog.  The cat is mostly indifferent towards DD.  Except he won't sleep with us anymore since she is in the bassinet beside the bed.  The dog is great...as long as I have DD.  He'll lay beside her PnP or bassinet if she's in either, follow me around the house with her, jump up if she cries, if someone else has her he'll watch them carefully, etc.  But if DH has her, he's a little jealous and will start barking at them.  Luckily, DD could care less about the noise.

  • We have a cat and at first he did not care about her at all but now that she has been around a month he is very protective of her. He follows us all around wherever she goes. He sleeps in the glider in her room when the door is open before bed time. And then he jumps down and lays next to us when we need to sit there to feed her, it is so cute that he knows we need to sit down. He always sits by us too. I think he is really going to miss us when I go back to work in a few weeks. I was worried he would be really naughty when she came but he has been a really good boy so far. :)

  • We have 2 Westies, and they are doing pretty well. They get really concerned and start whining when she really throws a fit, but other than that ? they are great.

  • my geriatric, arthritic, cancer patient, 13yo dog hasn't noticed/cared. but he doesn't notice much anymore.

my smaller 9yo dog is curious, but hasn't intruded into her personal space yet. my little dog is notorious for being jealous and trying to get as close to people as possible, but he's kept his space. he sits next to me whenever i breastfeed.

  • OMG my St. Bernard's name is molly! I cant wait to see how she reacts to the baby! Oh and the picture made me tear up your molly looks just like my sweet molly!

  • We have an 18 month old golden retriever, and he is so protective of LO! He's always trying to kiss him or sniff him, and is right there whenever he cries or I am feeding him. He's on the floor near my feet right now as I'm rocking LO.  We are thrilled he is okay with the baby!
  • My cat has ignored her to the extent that I am scared she is going to suffocate her.  When LO was laying next to me, the cat came up and was going to step right over top of her to get on me.  I have had to completely change the rules so that the cat doesn't get attention so that she will respect LO's space.

  • Our dog has done so much better than we expected. He's still under a year so he's crazy and hyper and since he came home with the baby yesterday he's been so calm. At first he was hyper to see me and dh (baby was sleeping in bassinett so he didn't see him yet) but once I took Brody out from his nap and let the dog sniff him he's been fine. He hasn't even tried to jump on the couch and he use to sit on the couch all the time. I'm so impressed.

  • My "baby" cat is a little jealous, but I think he's also relieved that I have someone else to kiss and cuddle on. He's a feral cat and he doesn't love all the attention so much.

My old kitty is really concerned when he cries. She sits next to him on the couch and watches out for him.

I'm thrilled, I thought they would both hate the baby, but so far it's going great!

  • We have a cat and a dog and I was so worried about both of them with the baby. For the most part, it has been better than I expected, but hard to handle all three of them when I'm home by myself! Our dog is still a hyper puppy and he gets overly excited anyway when people come over, when we get home, etc. He does well when it's just us at home (as in me, DH, LO and the pets) but when visitors come over, he goes nuts! he's excited to see them, then they barely give him attention and go right to the baby and he gets very jealous. A few times he has tried to jump up in their lap while they're holding my DD. But he's just not used to this many guests either. Now that I am home alone while my husband is back at work, the dog wants attention from me all the time. He will get right in front of me and basically demand to be pet. But, he is surprisingly gentle with LO when I put her on the floor or if she's in her bouncer, he will walk up and give little kisses. The cat hasn't come near her, but seems a little angry at us for bringing something else in the house that makes lots of noise!

  • Lucy seems to be doing ok with him. She honestly doesn't pay him too much attention. She loves to lick his feet :)

We've been trying to make sure we still snuggle with her and pay her attention because for so long she was like our only child.
