Baby Names

Rhys or Reece

Hello All!

My husband and I are choosing to be surprised about the gender of our little August Lion. We settled pretty quickly on a girl name, but are having a hard time with the boy name.

My husband's name is Rahsaan Ali and we would like for our son's name to have the same initials as his father's. Years ago before we were pregnant or even married we had decided on Reece which we both liked. However, now I see it used a lot more for girls instead of boys; although the spelling for girls is usually "Reese".

So, I was doing some research and found the original Welsh spelling, which is ?Rhys". The meaning is awesome and I think the spelling is phonetic. The meanings that were given were ultimate strength, king or zeal. I also like the spelling because it has an R and an H in the name like my husband's name. It also lets us use our first choice name without having to worry about having to spell it similar to more commonly use girl spelling. The baby's first and middle name would be Rhys Alexander.

So, with that said do you think I am saddling my son with a name that he will hate and that is too out there. It is pretty common among the Welsh, but not as common in the states. Having grown up with an odd full name, I would hate to turn around and do the same thing to my child!

Thanks ladies!!

  • I like Rhys Alexander a lot.

To me, Reece/Reese looks feminine and makes me think of peanut butter cups :).  Rhys is the most masculine, traditional way to spell it.  I like it!

  • Team Rhys!  Rhys Alexander is lovely.
  • I like Rhys. I think it looks the best and there is no confusion that is belongs to a boy.

  • I love Rhys.  My husband is part Welsh, so we are 95% sure we're going with Rhys.  We got a book of Welsh names from his mom, and we didn't see too much besides Rhys.  Half of them I didn't know how to pronounce.

  • Rhys is definitely the best spelling of the name - I would use it!

    I like Rhys Alexander Yes

  • I've got a 3 yr old boy named Rhys, so of course we love it. Pronunciation hasn't really been an issue, and we have since met two more little boys with this name in our area.
  • I like the Rhys spelling a LOT. Do it!

I LOVE Rhys. It is a great Welsh name.

Hate the Anglicized/phonetic spellings of Reece and Reese. I would personally never use them.

It is still a very common boys name (and terrible on a girl, imo)

Completely agree! It really bugs me to see a girl named Reese/Reece because it was originally a boy's name.

I will say, though, few people knew how to pronounce DS' name (his name is Rhys) because it is so uncommon here in the States. But we have gotten SO many compliments on his name! I also loved the meaning!

  • I'd go with Rhys Alexander - because my college boyfriend was Reece Alexander. Haha.

Honestly, though, I do think Rhys is a great name. Go for it!

  • Thanks ladies! I appreciate the feedback! Now my only worry is how our families will react. We are considering keeping it a secret until the baby gets here. So, the gender and the name will be a surprise!
