is it true: MMR can't be split?

For various reasons that aren't important here, I had planned on having DD's MMR vaccine split into 3 separate vaccines.  But, at our appt yesterday, my pedi told us that the vaccine is no longer made that way - it's a one shot deal now and that's the only option.  Has anyone else been told this?

thanks!

  • it varies by pedi office. It costs too much to oder the vaccine split for just one patient as they have to order in bulk. Some pedis do it based on high requests from patients/parents.

  • It can be split, so they are not telling you the truth. I got JUST a ruebella (the R in MMR) vaccine two years ago, so I know they can split it. I had to pay for it though and it was $56.

If you are not comfortable getting the MMR all together then maybe you need to call around and find an office that will do it. With all the alternate vaccine schedules out there these days there should be no reason why they will not do it the way you want.

  • thanks. I had a feeling that was the case. Lovely that my pedi flat out lied to me.
  • You generally have to get it split at public health offices, which have them individually but insurance won't cover it.
  • I'm in Canada and I am screwed because there is no way to get it broken up up here. Maybe I'll wait until we move back to the US so DS can get it.
  • I AM a pediatrician and there is no way for us to order it split in our office. It has nothing to do with cost...we just can't get it from any of our suppliers. Yes, two years ago we could, but not anymore. I was told that you could order it in Canada, but apparently that's not true. I'm sure that your pediatrician didn't "flat out lie to you."
