Delayed Walkers?

My DD #2 is almost 18 months and isn't walking yet.  She has gross motor delay and feeding issues due to low sensory and tone.  We've been in EI since she was 1 and she regularly sees a PT and feeding specialist.

She does cruise around furniture and is starting to stand on her own for a brief moment.  She also wears a SPIO vest and pants (most of the time) and we are currently trying out orthotics in her shoes.

I'm starting to panic a bit because she is so late to walk.  Has anyone else experienced a delay like this?  Is there anything else I can do to encourage her to walk or is it just a matter of time and she'll do it when she's ready.  I realize it will happen at some point, but I just can't help but worry.

TIA for any insight or help you can provide!

Re: Delayed Walkers?

  • What does your pedi say? Have you talked about doing testing to find out if there is a medical reason for her delay and other issues? I'm not an expert, I can only speak for my son's experience. He was 18 months and not walking, and we started seeing specialists to find out why. He was ultimately diagnosed with a brain tumor. He had most of the tumor removed, and his motor skills took off. He has made amazing progress since then.

  • my daughter is 17-months and is probably still at least 6 months away from walking due to low tone. she just got a stander last week to help strengthen her legs and core so hopefully it will help and we can at least get her standing on her own in the next couple months.
  • My DD started walking at 32 months and she has Global Delays. Do not panic. Your child will walk, she sounds close!

  • DD1 walked at 17 months, she didn't have delays. DD2 is on a 9-10 month level...she's almost 15 months. I've had a PT tell me DD2 isn't going to be walking in 6 months...so she'll be over 20 months then. Hopefully DD2 will prove her wrong.

  • From what I have read and am experiencing, kids with low tone often don't walk until around age 3. DS is walking in a gait trainer and standing with support. He is 28 months. It will be a while until he can walk on his own, but we are starting to look at walkers with his PT. It's just a long process when they have low tone, so my best advice is not to stress and just keep pushing along. :)

  • My DD is 21 months and she is just now starting to walk very short distances, like 6-8 steps on her own. She can stand alone for a long time. It sounds as if your LO is getting close. I know it's hard, but try not to consume yourself with when it will happen.
