Is Samantha too 90s?

DH and I both really like the name Samantha.  It's our #1 choice right now.  My only concern is, does it scream 1990s the way Tiffany makes me think of the 80s?  We tend to like more classic names, and I guess Samantha isn't super classic since it wasn't really around before the 50s and peaked in the 90s.

Re: Is Samantha too 90s?

  • I don't care for it, but it has nothing to do with when it was popular or how "dated" it may feel to some. I don't automatically think of the 90s when I hear it.

Considering . . . Agatha, Beatrix, Clara, Daphne, Isadora, Josephine, Matilda, Philippa, Tabitha, Winifred . . .
  • When I hear Samantha, I think of two things:

    1.) Sex & the City

    2.) the American Girl doll

Neither one of those "people" were born in the 90s, so I guess it doesn't scream 90s to me!

  • Its my DD's middle name and i like it.  It is a feminine name and i think, attractive.  I dont relate it to any particular decade

  • I know plenty of children under the age of 10 named Samantha.  I don't see it related to any particular era.

  • I think its a classic, that was popular in the 90's. Like Ava today--I associate it with the decade a bit, but it's not like its sickeningly trendy or anything.

So... 90's, sure. But not TOO 90's.

  • I know plenty of Samanthas who are either too old or too young to be born in the 90s, too. It doesn't belong to a particular decade for me. I think it's a nice choice.

  • While it was popular in the 90s, I don't think it is dated or belongs to that particular decade.

I think it works just fine now. It's a pretty name.

  • It does sound a little '90s to me, but not too much, anyhow, I like it and find it very femenine

  • Not really 90's. I just personally don't like the name. :/
  • IMO, yes. I am a child of the 90s and as I grew up, I met more girls with this name than I could count on both hands.I don't find it particularly attractive, either, b/c it has the word "man" right in the middle of it. I have the same problem with the name Amanda, but that's probably just a personal issue.

  • I also grew up in the 90's, and my best friend growing up was a Samantha, but I really like it regardless, and associate it more with her than the decade. I do tend to like what some people consider to be "dated" names though, haha..
  • I grew up in the 90's and have only known  1-2 Samanthas. It's a popular name right now in 2011 though so I wouldn't worry about it being dated. I think its top 30 or so.

  • DD is Samantha. At first I thought it was too 80s. I kept thinking Who's the Boss, Tony Danza saying "Samanta". She was one of 5 Samantha's in preschool her first year. Then it went down to 2. Now there's another Samantha at school, but at least she's in another classroom.

There are a lot of nicknames for Samantha, make sure you like all of them, or else she'll pick the version you don't like. (I prefer Sam or Sammie and she loves the full girly version, but it's her name.) :)

Also, check the SSA.gov for your STATE. Nationwide, Samantha was 10 the year she was born, but in California it was much higher.

BTW, go Nova! (I grew up there.)

  • Also, it has been around for a while. My mom thought I was naming her after "the witch from Bewitched?" (Shocking.) I was so tempted to say, "No, like the slut from Sex and the City."
