what was your c/s experience in the hospital?

im sure this is asked all the time.

good? bad?  bad nurses?  good nurses?  if you have a child at home how was that handled?  did your husband stay with you practically the whole time?  any experiences would be welcome : )

Re: what was your c/s experience in the hospital?

  • I lived in fear of the "double whammy," so having a c/s wasn't a huge letdown for me like it is for some people. Overall, I'd say the pain was less than I expected (with the pain meds, of course!). The nurses were all pretty good for the most part. I was on Lovenox (blood thinner) shots during pregnancy and 6w PP and always opted to give them to myself. A couple of the nurses got a little impatient with my technique, which is slow, as I test a around a little to find a less painful area and then inject very slowly. One nurse even said something like "Just jab it in there." Ok, those probably weren't her exact words, but that was her message!

While I knew twins would likely come early, I'd say MH and I were less prepared than most for a couple reasons. At that time, MH was working 4-5 days away from home (as in totally away, not home at night). I had also convinced myself that I wasn't going until at least 36w and more likely 37 or 38. Clearly my boys had other thoughts. Because of that, MH didn't stay with me at the hospital. He'd leave late in the evening and return about 8am so that he could work on getting things done at home, get a reasonable night of sleep, and take care of our dog. Our boys were in the NICU, so he might have stayed with me if the boys were staying in my room.

    Good luck!

TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

  • I had a great experience in the hospital after my c/s! I know a lot of the nurses because 1. I am a nurse in the same hospital and 2. I was admitted 3 times for PTL before they actually came! The c/s went smoothly and I had very manageable pain (only took Ibuprofen, no Norco!) The worst of it was the recovery nurse who loaded me up with IV Morphine without even asking if I wanted it. She asked if I was getting feeling back, or if I was sore at all... I said yea a little bit. And before I knew it, BAM... 2mg of Morphine was pushed into the IV. Now keep in mind I had never previously taken anything stronger than a Tylenol PM. The Morphine immediately made me feel the worst I have ever felt in my life! I could not keep my eyes open and when I did open them I was dry heaving constantly. When they wheeled me down to the NICU to see my babies I couldn't even enjoy it Sad It took almost 12 hours to wear off. Needless to say I was very tentative with any further pain meds and just took the Ibuprofen!!

The nurses were great and supportive of me getting down to NICU all the time. Just keep communicating with them what you want/need and everything should be fine! There are always a couple less than pleasant nurses but hopefully you will get lucky Wink

DH stayed with me the first night and my mom stayed the second two nights so that DH could go home and take care of our dog. I don't have older children so no input on that! GL!

  • I hope you don't mind if I chime in since I'm just a lurker.  I had a pretty decent experience post c/s.  My nurses (for the most part) were wonderful.  I only say for the most part because I feel that around shift changes my meds were due and I was often left waiting for quite a while.  When it was time to be discharged we waited forever, even though the nurse said she'd be right back with our paperwork.  Nope it took another 3 hours to bust out and we were really ready to take our babies home.

My lactation consultant was horrific.  I actually wrote a letter to the hospital about her.  AWFUL.  I had her banned from my room because she was so incredibly rude.

DH stayed with me the entire time.  He didn't even want to leave to go get himself food.  We don't have any other children, so I'm no help there.

Recovery was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.  The shakes post surgery were the worst part of the entire thing.

  • I was scheduled to deliver at 38 weeks at a very nice suburban hospital in Barrington. It was such a positive experience that I would do it all over again. My doctor was great, the whole team of nurses was fantastic, I was never in pain or uncomfortable. I had my girls at 8:00 am and by 11:00 pm I was walking the halls. Babies stayed with us in the room at all times, my h had a pull out bed ( very nice). Babies were only taken once a day out of the room for a bath. While I was there I got a mani and pedi in the room, had numerous visitors and it was never a problem with a staff. My husband was there with me every night, he left usually during the day for a couple of hours to check on our dog at home or bring me some goodies. My recovery was very fast too, I was home on the 4 day and I bled only for 10 days pp. Overall experience - fantastic. Hope you have as good as mine!

  • daisy's mom - im delivering at C D H in Win.field- we'll see.

my son was at north.western downtown.  the delivery portion was excellent (just vaginal birth though).  recovery portion - just okay, but the hospital itself was amazing.  so i kinda dont know what to expect here at C D H - esp. if it's a c/s - we just moved out here not too long ago. i have a few friends that had a c/s at C D H, i should bug them for more details.

my mom just told me that she would stay for the entirety of my hospital stay, at home with my son, so i feel better about that.

  • My hospital experience was awesome. All of the nurses were super nice and they were so sweet. When we walked the hallway, other nurses would comment "Oh so those are the twins". When we left they hooked us up major with all of the formula, diapers, etc. My pain management was great...I only wish I would have ordered my pain meds from the hospital so my hubby didn't have to leave when we went home to get them.

  • I had a good experience with my c/s.  This was actually my 2nd one (DD1 was born by c/s as well).  Although I didn't make to the scheduled date, everything was handled really well when I came into L&D.  They monitored me while we waited for my OB to arrive, and once he was there things went quickly and smoothly.  I had to be kept in recovery longer than the first time because there was some bleeding that wasn't letting up, so they had to get that under control, but they got me to my room after a couple of hours.

They stay in the hospital was good. The nurses were awesome.  I struggled the first night trying to take care of the babies (I was trying to change DS and DD2 started throwing up) and the nurses were very helpful and convinced me to get some sleep the next night :).   We had to stay longer than expected, it had to do with DS' apnea.  They took all necessary precautions before we took him home. My only complication was wound seroma (fluid build up behind the incision) but it wasn't painful, it just started draining a couple of days after I came home and DH took me in for the OB to finish draining it and to bandage it.  Pain management went well.  I took painkillers for the first week, but after that, I weaned myself off them and kept going with Ibuprofen.

As far as DD1 goes, a friend had offered to help, so we dropped her of at this friend's house on our way to the hospital (at about 5 a.m.).  She took DD to daycare and DH picked her up.  One of my MILs drove into town with one of her kids and she helped take care of DD during the first weekend. DH didn't stay at the hospital.  He came to see me every day.  He also had to be home quite a bit because our A/C unit broke and it was 90+ degrees that week, so he wanted to fix it before the babies and I came home.

     Hope that helps!
