Eco-Friendly Family

7th Generation line

Running low on non EF cleaning products and ready to hop on the wagon to be a greener family. I purchased a few products from this line tonight due to a good sale, and I want to know the good/bad/ugly truth about them as well as if you can recommend something better! TIA!!

Re: 7th Generation line

  • I know a lot of ladies here make their own cleaners or use vinegar products to clean their homes.  I use a lot of vinegar, castile soap, and tea tree oil to clean my house.  I will say though, I do use 7th generation products when I do buy premade.  Especially their all purpose cleaner, for whatever reason it works really well on glass (we have a glass kitchen table).  I am super thankful that my local grocery store started making seventh generation knockoffs with similar ingredients and packaging, as it is WAY cheaper.  We use 7th generation toilet paper as I haven't quite convinced my H to do family cloth yet :)

  • I don't often use purchased cleaning products.  I don't know anything about it in terms of social responsibility and it's a rather large company that makes chemical cleaners (albeit from natural sources) in mostly disposable packaging.  That said, I don't think there is anything "wrong" with that line, and it is better (both in terms of toxicity of products and responsibility of production) and they do engineer new approaches like the packaging discussed here:  https://www.greenbiz.com/news/2011/03/10/7th-generation-debuts-4x-laundry-detergent-paper-bottle.

Another reasonable company is Ecos/Earth Friendly (which is available in some places in bulk, as in you refill your own containers).

  • I absolutely love Seventh Generation!  I have used most of their products from cleaners, laundry soap, baby wipes and have not been disappointed. Hopefully you will enjoy them as well.

  • I haven't bought any cleaning products in a while I swear by white distilled vinegar and baking soda. I swear this two clean just about everything around my house. I use lemons sometimes, castille soap too and I add a drop or two or EO to make my solution smell a little better even though the smell of vinegar dissipates once the surface is dry. Give it a try, it's dirt cheap too!
