Baby Names

Ruby needs a middle name

Despite my misgivings on the popularity of this name (it's above 50 in my state, I was hoping for something out of the top 100 =(  ), this is probably what we're going to name our little girl.

I suggested Ruby Diane (Diane was my grandmother's name), DH likes Ruby Ann (Ann is my middle name).  I don't like Ann because it sounds like one smoosh name together (Rubiann), and would give her the initials RAG.

Soooo...  Suggestions?  DH is ok with Diane, but we're also looking to entertain other options.

Re: Ruby needs a middle name

  • Ruby is a beautiful name and it has the advantage to match well with just about anything!

I get what you mean about Ann....I would pass on that one.

Diane is lovely. This might be off the wall, but how about a variation on it: Danae.

  • I think Ruby Louise (nn Ruby Lou), is DARLING. It may go on the list for a future DD, even if I do end up having a Pearl this time around!

  • I like family names if you want to use them. My immediate thought for a middle name was Ruby Eleanor.
  • Diane is kinda cool because while it is your grandmother's name, it also sorta incorporates the "Ann" from you as well. I like it!  I am really big on using MNs that have some meaning.

  • Ruby Diane sounds like the winner to me, especially since you both agree on it.

If you're just toying with other options, I think Ruby Louise is also darling, but it doesn't have the meaning that Diane has.

  • I really like the sound of Ruby Diane, and Diane has the Ann sound in it anyways, so it kind of has a double meaning :)

     Ruby is beautiful!

  • Ruby Ann doesn't flow well IMO, I get what you're saying.

I like Ruby Diane and I love the meaning it has for you...

Besides that, I do adore Ruby Jane.

    Good luck choosing!

  • I think Diane sounds great with Ruby and is an adorable way to honor your GM.  I definitely prefer it to Ann.  Plus, the middle initial D. sounds great with Ruby...

I live in Washington. It's ranked 47 here!!! I haven't met any Rubys in real life though (and I work at a school with 7 preschool classrooms). Maybe they all live on the other side of the state? Thanks so much, everybody! You've given us a lot to think about!

  • This baby probably would have been named Ruby if it had turned out to be another girl. DH was in love with Ruby Jane, which seems to be quite popular around here!

I loved that combo, too, but was kind of leaning toward using one of my favorite names that I will never get to use as a first name because DH vetoed them (as first names). Those would have been Ruby Ophelia or Ruby Seraphina.

  • I love the name Ruby!
